Time Lady of L.A. #11: Pages 19-20

Page 19, 5 Panels- Hotel Cairo Lobby, 1985 Cairo Egypt

Panel 1: Cut to a close-up of Amanda's after listening to the question from the gentleman. The worries of the moment appear to be completely faded from her view. Her eyes grow wide with glorious joy upon hearing the statement.

AMANDA [surprised and giddy]: Wait...you can surf in Egypt? FRONT DESK ATTENDANT [Off-Panel]: Oh yeah!

Panel 2-3: Back to the Attendant with another wide smile, turning his head back toward the two young ladies. The rest of his body firmly in front of the large wall of keys, searching for one of the empty ones as he speaks. The action follows up toward Panel 3 as he continues speaking. His hand reaches up toward the top right half of the key board.

FRONT DESK ATTENDANT [Cont., to Amanda; Panel 2]: Dahab, Ras Sedr, El Gouna, Safaga...Sharm el-Sheik. Lovely towns, regardless of the season. FRONT DESK ATTENDANT [Cont.; Panel 3]: The closest one to the city is Ras Sedr. The waves aren't terribly large, given that it's nearly winter. But I imagine you and your friend can find something to work with.

Panel 4: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. A few beats later, we see the Attendant turn back around toward Giana and Amanda. In his right hand, you can see a set of keys looped around a metal ring. His grin has shifted slightly toward a more flirtatious set-up, leaning forward toward our two heroines.

FRONT DESK ATTENDANT [to Giana and Amanda]: If you need ride, just...say the word!

Panel 5: Back to Giana and Amanda at the other end of the desk. They look at one another with a degree of shock as well as disgust at the flirtatious advance from the older attendant. Giana tries to hold back a laugh in regards to the whole scene, knowing something that the man from the past doesn't know. Underneath the panel view, as this goes on, you can hear what appears to be a buzz from Feli9 that steadily increases in volume.

AMANDA: Yeah... GIANA [blurts out]: Umm... AMANDA [Bubble 2]: We'll think about it.

Panel 1: Cut back to the Attendant a split second later. You can see the same hand that held the keys is now placed on top of the desk, along with his free left hand which is closer to the bottom edge of it. His demeanor shifts toward a paternalistic matter, even though he's no more than six years older than either Giana or Amanda.

FRONT DESK ATTENDANT [to Giana and Amanda]: Are you sure? I do not know if you know this, but this city...can be very dangerous if you don't have the right protection.

Panel 2-3: Back to our two heroines a moment later. Amanda now can be seen holding back a laugh at the statement, while Giana uses her free hand to cover her mouth and the laugh coming out of her mouth. Just as was the case in the previous panel, the buzzing emanating from Feli9 grows louder. In Panel 3, you can see Ms. Franklin drop her hand down to her side (laugh thoroughly contained) in order to address the man.

AMANDA [nodding, to the Front Desk Attendant; Panel 2]: I'm sure. GIANA [to the Front Desk Attendant; Panel 3]: How much is the room?

Panel 4-5: In Panel 4 back behind the front desk, accepting their answer, the Front Desk Attendant starts to lift his right hand off the desk, leaving the keys lying on it. His body shifts toward a typical customer service-like manner, steering the conversation back to the sale. In Panel 5 though, a second later, his attention is pulled toward the mysterious buzzing sound that has hovered through the course of the past couple of pages.

FRONT DESK ATTENDANT [Panel 4]: That will be twenty-two American dol... FRONT DESK ATTENDANT [Cont., looking up with a mix of irritation and confusion; Panel 5]: What in the name of Allah is that?

Panel 6: Cut to a close-up of Giana's face She takes a brief pause to herself, contemplating what possible answer she could give in order to steer things away from more dangerous lines of conversation. As this goes on, what was earlier a steadily growing buzzing from her metal feline compatriot has now evolved into more of a steady series of beeps not unlike what you would hear on radar screens.

GIANA [searching for an answer]: Umm...power lines?
