James Brighton Society, Chapter 2: Pages 7-8

Page 7, 5 Panels- D.C. Metro Police Precinct Office, Georgetown section of Washington D.C. Panel 1: Cut to a shot of the Detective a few moments later; the layout turned the opposite way from what we saw in the previous page. She slips the flask into a hidden pocket of her coat, walking away from the desk in the direction of her cubicle. You can see Officer Reese in the background already returning to his work. Panel 2-4: A three-part set of panels, action shots that follow her over the course of a minute as she passes the empty desks that come in and out of view in the bottom of each of the panel views. There's the sound of Christmas music playing on the radio, connecting the three panels together and projecting a general sense of peace in the page (and in Tasha's face). It's not till Panel 4, however, that she stops moving in front of her office. Her peace is disrupted by the sight of something off-panel. DET. RANDOLPH [annoyed, Panel 4]: Uggh.... Panel 5: Cut to a shot of her desk occupied with a set of papers messily assembled on both sides of it and a black Underwood Typewriter splitting the difference. You can see on the leather chair she sits on a pile of quesadillas and Tabasco splattered all over it. The music continues to play in the background, providing a gentle discordant note to the subtle racism on display. DET. RANDOLPH [Cont., grumbling to herself]: Malditos hombres blancos... Page 8, 6 Panels- Det. Randolph's Desk, D.C. Metro Police Precinct Office, Georgetown section of Washington D.C. Panel 1: Action shot of the good Detective a couple of seconds later, taking a seat on the ground next to her chair. Her right hand reaching up to the desktop to the right of the typewriter in order to pick up a stack of folders. Panel 2-3: A two-part set of panels that center on a direct shot of Tasha a second after the action of Panel 1. In Panel 2, with the folder resting on her lap, she reaches over and grabs one of quesadillas from the pile as she reads. And in the next panel, Tasha takes a bite of the food and tosses it back on to the seat as she continues reading. DET. RANDOLPH [dismissive, to herself; Panel 3]: Meh...I've had better! Panel 4-5: Cut to a shot tilted up from the level of the documents toward Tasha's face as she reads through them as quick as she can. The focus is evident on the young woman's face as the minutes of time elapse within the confined space of these two panels. You can see a section of her desk visible in the background. DET. RANDOLPH [narration thought caption, Panel 4]: Gotta be a good case here somewhere... DET. RANDOLPH [Cont., narration thought caption; Panel 5]: Something nobody will get territorial over if I grab it. Panel 6: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. The good Detective's attention is pulled up from the documents a few moments later by the sound of a booming, commanding voice coming from off-panel. DISPATCH [Off-Panel, from the speakers]: We have reports of a 10-41 at the Avalon Arms.
