James Brighton Society, Chapter 3: Pages 7-8

Page 7, 6 Panels- Grem's Workstation, Downtown Washington D.C.

Panel 1: Cut to a shot of Tasha on the other side of the table, following Grem as he walks back toward the center of the robe. She has a great look of curiosity over the appearance of the device in question, mixed with a sense of confusion as to what said device actually does. As she speaks, you can hear the sound of an electric hum slowly building in intensity off-panel.

DET. RANDOLPH [to Grem]: What the hell is that thing? GREM [Off-Panel, to Det. Randolph]: That, Detective, is the Skelly.

Panel 2: Back to Grem on the other side of the table a second later. His eyes are firmly focused on the piece of clothing in front of him as well as the display screen from the Skelly, waving the device from left to right as if it were a wand. You can see a ball of energy emanating from the metal device with each movement.

GREM [Cont.]: It's a magic detection device, made from a rare metal I got while exploring in Greece. I know it's colonial in inspiration, but at least it has a purpose- to sniff out our world's renewable magical energy that's triggered whenever someone utters a spell. Which is better than most of the oppressive shite that spawns from colonialist thinking. It's also pretty good in finding out if something's cursed or not.

Panel 3: Same setting/layout as Panel 1. The good Detective flashes a curious, yet somewhat cautious eyebrow in regards to what she heard in the previous panel. You can even see the faintest appearance of a chuckle as she speaks.

DET. RANDOLPH: You think someone cursed this robe on purpose? Do I need to be taken care of for it?

Panel 4: Same setting/layout as what we saw in Panel 2. He looks up toward Tasha and shakes his head in regards to at least the second question. The energy has increased from the bottom of the Skelly as he speaks; the device located around the hood of the robe.

GREM [explanatory, with a warning at the end]: I doubt you're in trouble, Ms. Randolph. Mainly 'cause curses usually are focused on a specific target rather than go willy-nilly. Whoever was meant to get whomped's already been whomped. What you should really worry about is... SOUND EFFECT [from the device]: DING!

Panel 5-6: A two-part set of panels that centers back on the same setting and layout as the previous panel. In Panel 5, Grem stops his train of thought and turns his gaze back to the view screen of his Skelly. A few moments of silent contemplation pass as we go into Panel 6, taking on each gram of information carefully and thoughtfully.

GREM [to himself, Panel 5]: Hmmm...huh? DET. RANDOLPH [Off-Panel, curious; Panel 5]: What? GREM [Cont., Panel 6]: There's a Level 3 Protection spell on this robe. Which is only used for communing with higher beasts.
