James Brighton Society, Chapter 3: Pages 17-18

Page 17, 6 Panels- Tian's Lair, D2T2, Woodland section of Washington D.C.

Panel 1-2: A two-part set of panels that centers on the faces of our two protagonists, following the sorceress as she descends to the ground over the course of a minute. It starts in silence in Panel 1 with Grem doesn't appear all that fazed by the warning and the good Detective flashes Tian a look of annoyance at the vague warning. Then she voices her displeasure in Panel 2 all while, in the background, with each panel, you can see a growing beam of light emanating from dead center where the entrance is located.

GREM [Panel 1]: Decidedly vague...but helpful. DET. RANDOLPH [to Tian, Panel 2]: That's it? Nothing about what the danger is or..what the hell we might be able to do to stop it? TIAN [Off-Panel, to Det. Randolph chuckling; Panel 2]: This is not the National Broadcasting Company, Detective.

Panel 3: We move to a shot of Tian a split second later as she reaches the ground, floating just a foot and a half off of the tile floor. The crimson red robe floating in front of her, moving in the direction of Grem and Tasha. You can see the cauldron off in the right section of the background behind her.

TIAN [Cont., with a reassuring smile]: I cannot display every scrap of information in crystal clarity that one would need before going into a dangerous situation. There are things that an entity must surmise on their own.

Panel 4: Cut to a shot of the Irish inventor looking at Tian, walking toward the goblin sorceress with a genuine look of appreciation on his face. You can see in the background behind him the sight of an assortment of magical ingredients hanging on the wall, along with part of a long axe, as he speaks.

GREM [appreciatively, to Tian]: I know, and thanks for what you could provide. You’ve been a big boost for us in our investigation.

Panel 5: Back to Tian in a similar setting and layout to what we saw in Panel 3. Her gaze shifts slightly toward Grem's direction with her feet touching the ground gently. You can see in the same area of the panel where the cauldron is located a little billow of smoke emanating from over top of it.

TIAN [nods with the same level of appreciation, to Grem]: I wish you and your comrade safe travels and good fortune in the difficulties to come, friend Gremlin...

Panel 6: Back to a close-up shot of Gremlin the same setting and layout to what we saw in Panel 4. The level of appreciation he showed in that panel is on display here, along with a sense of apology that comes through as he speaks.

GREM: Same to you and your kin, friend Tian. Sorry about what happened in the Lost City a while back. If I knew how badly you wanted those crystals, I wouldn't have torched… DAX [Off-Panel, from the doorway]: Um, mother?

Page 18, 5 Panels- Tian's Lair/Front Porch, D2T2, Woodland section of Washington D.C.

Panel 1: We shift to a shot from the front door of the lair of Dax standing in the middle of the doorway. He has a calm, reminding look on his face, pointing with his thin left arm back out toward the entrance. You can see a little section of the front lobby of D2T2 in the background over the goblin's left shoulder.

DAX [Cont., to Tian]: The volunteers for Baku's daily utfodringen have arrived.

Panel 2: Cut to a shot of the goblin sorceress a second later. Her gaze is over toward her progeny, giving a subtle nod in his direction. You can see her body just starting to levitate off the floor as she speaks.

TIAN [appreciative, to Dax]: Thank you, Dax my dear.

Panel 3-4: A two-part set of panels that widens its scope to take in Grem and Tasha as well as the sorceress over the course of a little more time. The setting and layout is similar to different shots of them earlier. At this point, in Panel 3, Tian is firmly above the heads of both of our protagonists, addressing them collectively. You can see what appears to be a black half-circle emerge over the sorceress' frame as she speaks. Then, in the next panel, she disappears in a cloud of smoke before their eyes.

TIAN [to Grem, Panel 3]: It is water under the bridge, old friend… TIAN [Cont. to Grem and Det. Randolph; Panel 3, Bubble 2]: If you two will excuse me, I must tend to the Baku’s dinner lest she gorge themselves on the minds of the neighborhood again (including yours). You can show yourselves out... DET. RANDOLPH [Off-Panel caption, Panel 4]: "So...what now?"

Panel 5: We move to a shot of our two protagonists a minute later, with Grem to the left and Det. Randolph to the right. The doors to D2T2 close shut behind them with the last of the normal looking volunteers entering as they speak, letting in a little beam of light emanating from inside the building. You can see the last scraps of snowflakes from the previous storm fall in the foreground while they're walking.

DET. RANDOLPH [thinking out loud, to Grem]: I can do some grunt work on the JBS down at the station. Check out some old missing persons cases for any leads, keep an eye on his body, if or when it pops up like the [uneasy] sorceress said. GREM [agreeing, gripping the robe in his left hand; to Det. Randolph]: That's a good idea. I'll head over to the library, pour over newspapers for any mention of the Society or shots of evil looking ivory mansions nearby. DET. RANDOLPH [Bubble 2]: Aren't mansions, on the whole, evil-looking? GREM [Bubble 2]: From my experience...yeah, a good chunk of 'em are.
