James Brighton Society, Chapter 4: Pages 1-2
Page 1, 6 Panels- Det. Randolph's Office, Metro Police precinct, Georgetown section of Washington D.C.
Panel 1: We open on a shot in the afternoon of our heroine, Det. Randolph, looking over a large stack of documents at her desk one by one. Her coat is laid out on the chair behind her, though you can only see the sleeves on each corner. In the background, there is a brief snapshot of action from the other officers busily focused on other cases at that time.
CAPTION: Det. Randolph's Office D.C. Metro Police Precinct- Georgetown 2 Days Later
Panel 2-4: A three-part set of panels that centers on the same setting and layout as the top of the page. With each set of panels that she starts to read from the stack on her desk, what started out in Panel 1 as a look of weariness on the young woman's face, slowly but surely starts to see something pop into view by the time we reach Panel 4.
DET. RANDOLPH [thought bubble, Panel 4]: Hmmm...I think I got something here!
Panel 5: Action shot of Tasha quickly standing up from her chair, holding a piece of the stack of folders that were on her desk. Her face exhibiting a stoic determination as she moves, ready to get out into the field and follow what she found out through. You can see a little bit of her desk and the typewriter placed in front of the folders in the background.
Panel 6: Cut to an interior shot of a front door located at a different part of the precinct office a minute later. There is a piece of glass with a wooden frame around it that has the main focus of the panel at that point. You can see scrawled in black letters, albeit in reverse in terms of the reader's perspective, "Capt. Lennox" on the glass.
Page 2, 5 Panels- Capt. Lennox's Office, D.C. Metro Police Precinct, Georgetown
Panel 1: Same setting/layout as the last panel of the previous page. A few moments later, the Detective in the doorway with folders firmly in hand, looking out toward the precinct captain sitting off-panel at this point. You can see the same level of steady determination in her face that we saw at that same point in Page 1.
DET. RANDOLPH [to Capt. Lennox]: Captain?
Panel 2: Cut to a shot of CAPTAIN OLIVER LENNOX seated at his desk. He's a tall man, even while seated in the humble looking leather chair, who looks like a mix of David Straithairn and James Stewart. He has blue-green eyes and dark hair that is peppered with patches of white on the sides. He glances up from the work and waves his young subordinate to come inside.
CAPT. LENNOX [with some warmth]: C'mon in, Detective...what is it about?
Panel 3: Action shot of Tasha a second later, making her way toward the desk with a steady pace. The door closing behind her courtesy of a gentle touch from the young woman's free hand. In the background, you can see a little section of how Lennox's office is furnished, which is to say that it's bland and not terribly exciting with tiny bits of personal flourishes from his family hanging on the wall.
DET. RANDOLPH [a little quick in speech, to match her walking]: It's about the Brennan case. I've been checking out some old case files from the Capitol and Georgetown, and...I've noticed a fascinating connection with Congressional staff that I think could--
Panel 4-5: Back to the Captain's desk in a similar setting and layout to what we saw in Panel 2. In Panel 4, he sighs and leans forward in the seated position in order to stop the forward procession of the Detective's thought in the previous panel. In the next panel, he then turns his attention to his subordinate, pushing the chair back in order to soon stand up.
CAPT. LENNOX [cautious, Panel 4]: The case is closed, Detective! We have the body. We'll have a projected summation of the suspect. There is nothing else to build from here. DET. RANDOLPH [Off-Panel, Panel 4]: What about the missing bo--? CAPT. LENNOX [Cont., Panel 5]: Be glad of the work you made...and move on! DET. RANDOLPH [Off-Panel, Panel 5]: ....Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.
