James Brighton Society, Chapter 7: Pages 11-12
Page 11, 6 Panels- GV Jones' Office, JBS Headquarters, Arlington Virginia
Panel 1: We move to a shot of the Grand Vizier typing up a document in his office in the late of night, illuminated by an off-panel light shining from the top of the panel view. He looks up at the person in front of him via his periphery as he speaks. You can see his bookcase in the background along with a window showing the rear of the large compound.
GV JONES [nonchalantly, to the FRT Head]: Notify their next of kin, and make sure their families are well compensated by the Society. FRT HEAD [Off-Panel]: Yes, sir...
Panel 2-3: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. In Panel 2, he stops writing upon the sound of the phone (which was located on the desk next to the typewriter). His face turning quite serious upon seeing the flashing red dial in front of the receiver. In Panel 3, Mr. Jones picks it up with one, signaling the subordinate to go away with the other.
GV JONES [to the FRT Head, Panel 3]: That must be the heads of Project Lifeboat. Leave--now! FRT HEAD [Off-Panel]: Of course, Grand Vizier!
Panel 4-6: A three-part set of panels that focuses on Jones' face, listening to the assembled voices on the other end. The conversation continues on over a period of time in each panel with the same stoic businesslike demeanor that he displayed in Panel 3. You can see a little section of the bookcase in the background of each of the three panels.
GV JONES [Panel 4]: Will the shelters be complete in time for New Year's Eve? Excellent... GV JONES [Panel 5]: What of the food storage and hydrofiltration systems in those shelters? Are they operational?...Very good to hear. GV JONES [Panel 6]: Begin the notification of our branch members in Europe and globally, along with accompanying travel arrangements. Now... TASHA [Off-Panel caption, Panel 6]: Does it ever get lonely?
Page 12, 7 Panels- Grem's Library, Apartment, Washington D.C.
Panel 1: We move to a shot of Grem in the library, relaxing in a chair while reading H.G. Wells. The glare of a lamp shines on his face and the book itself, located behind him in the background His gaze is partially up in Tasha's direction, showing a degree of curiosity to the question's meaning as he reads.
CAPTION: Grem's Pocket Library, Late Evening/Early Morning of December 29th GREM [raised eyebrow with a grin, to Tasha]: Lonely how? TASHA [Off-Panel]: This kinda life...all the danger and weirdness. GREM [interjecting, Bubble 2]: You thinkin' of joining the club, Tasha? TASHA [Off-Panel]: Not a chance in hell, gringo. Living forever, dealing with stupid white people= no thanks! No offense... GREM [Bubble 3]: None taken.
Panel 2-3: A two-part set of panels that cuts back to the former Detective, looking over the documents she got from the Hart building along with some stuff on the Gog and Magog that she had gathered up earlier. In Panel 2, she speaks while the bulk of her focus goes about reading and analyzing everything in front of them. In the next panel, moments later, Tasha looks up to address her friend.
TASHA [curious, Panel 2]: All the years you've been alive...the people you've cared and loved die on you. It'd make sense that kinda pain would take a toll on a person's psyche over time. TASHA [to Grem, Panel 3]: I know men, particularly in this country, love to be stoic and keep their emotions bottled up. But you seem different than most men, so...
Panel 4: Back to Grem in a similar setting and layout as the first panel. He tenses up slightly at the question, placing both of his arms on top of the book which cover it completely from view of the reader.
GREM [in thought]: Aye, sad and lonely pop up a lot with me, moreso than most souls with Irish blood. Especially in the mornings if...
Panel 5-6: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. In Panel 5, the immortal Irishman stops mid-thought, delayed by the feel of a stone that forms in the back of his throat. You can see a slight redness form in his eyes at the same moment. Then, in Panel 6, he shakes it off and returns to what he was about to say.
GREM [clears his throat, Panel 5] GREM [Panel 6]: If the eyes of my parents or my fiance don't arrive in my dreams more often than not. GREM [Panel 6, Bubble 2]: But I press on, as best as I can- find the beauty and the unpredictability of the world around me. It helps out for the most part. I keep those I've lost close to heart in a shrine to Donn in my bedroom...
Panel 7: We move to a close-up of Grem's chest where we see a key revealed from within the confines of his vest and buttoned-up work shirt. It is a 19th century designed copper key that still looks as fresh as it did when it was first made. You can see his fingers wrapped around it in the center of the panel view.
GREM [Cont.]: Locked up, alongside a heaping helping of irony, by the same key that once belonged to the house me and Margaret were gonna call home...a lifetime ago.
