Jones St., Chapter 1: Pages 5-6

Page 5, 5 Panels- Lunchroom, Durango High School

Panel 1-3: A three-part set of panels that moves the setting over the course of a handful of feet, following a walk path between tables that shows different sections of students eating and chatting with each other in the background. The lyrics drifting along in balloons in the top of each panel leading to…

DAVID BOWIE [Panel 1]: “Hey man, I gotta straighten my face This mellow thighed chick just put my spine out of place…” DAVID BOWIE [Panel 2]: “Hey man, my schooldays insane Hey man, my work's down the drain…” DAVID BOWIE [Panel 3]: “Hey man, well she's a total blam-blam She said she had to squeeze it but she then she…” DAVID BOWIE [Panel 3, Bubble 2]: “Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe Put your ray gun to my head…”

Panel 4: We move to a shot of HENRY AUSTIN, a young white guy of an equally curvy figure as Melanie. He has dark shaggy hair, green eyes and is wearing a long sleeved Labyrinth T-Shirt. As you can see from the bubbles, he happens to be listening on his iPod (which rests on his lunch tray next to his burger) to “Moonage Daydream.”

DAVID BOWIE: ““Press your space face close to mine, love Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah

Panel 5: Cut to a close-up on Mr. Austin’s face a few moments later. He looks over and smiles slightly, noticing Melanie a few steps from where he’s standing at the moment. You can see a mixture of gray and blue in the background from the walls and the lighting off-panel just above his head.

DAVID BOWIE: “Don't fake it baby, lay the real thing on me The church of man, love, is such a holy place to be…”

Panel 1: Back to teenage Melanie in the same setting and layout as the end of the previous page. She is seen taking a bite of her burrito while she listens to “Suffragete City” playing on her iPod, oblivious at that point to the other people around her. You can see her comic book next to the tray, closed and with the cover in view of the reader.

DAVID BOWIE [Caption]: “Make me baby, make me know you really care Make me jump into the air…” HENRY [Off-Panel, to Melanie]: Anyone sitting here?

Panel 2-3: A two-part set of panels that start off in the same setting and layout as the previous panel. Melanie places the burrito back on the plate and looks at the guy coming toward him. She nods slightly at the statement. In Panel 3, we cut to Mr. Austin sitting down on the seat across from her, placing the food tray in front of him.

HENRY [relieved, Panel 3]: Thanks…I was in the library studying for a Chem test next week, and I lost track of time.

Panel 4: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. Henry takes off his left headphone as he gets situated, getting a better look at the young woman as he does. It’s here that he notices the detail of her shirt and gets a glint of nerdy camaraderie.

HENRY [pointing at it]: Shiny shirt!

Panel 5-6: A two-part set of panels that move back on Melanie in the same setting and layout as the top of the page. In Pane 5, while she still listens to her iPod, we see her look down at the shirt to see what he’s talking about. Then in Panel 6, she gives a quick half-grin, only gazing at him for the briefest of moments before returning to her food.

TEENAGE MELANIE [dismissive, Panel 6]: Oh yeah, thanks…
