Jones Street, Chapter 1: Pages 7-8
Page 7, 4 Panels- Lunchroom, Durango High School
Panel 1-4: A four-part set of panels that focuses on a side shot of the two of them, with Melanie seated to the left and Henry to the right. For the first couple of panels, we see them busily eating alone while listening to their respective iPods again; the lyrics of the song floating above them. This motif continues on in Panel 3 as first Melanie is seen singing along to “Absolute Beginners” from her iPod, followed by Henry in Panel 4.
DAVID BOWIE [Panel 1]: “I've nothing much to offer There's nothing much to take I'm an absolute beginner…” DAVID BOWIE [Panel 1, Bubble 2]: “But I'm absolutely sane As long as we're together The rest can go to hell…” DAVID BOWIE [Panel 2]: “I absolutely love you But we're absolute beginners…” DAVID BOWIE [Panel 2, Bubble 2]: “With eyes completely open But nervous all the same…” HENRY [singing, Panel 3]: “If our love song Could fly over mountains Could laugh at the ocean Just like the films…” TEENAGE MELANIE [singing, Panel 4]: “There's no reason To feel all the hard times…” TEENAGE MELANIE AND HENRY [together, Panel 4]: “To lay down the—”

Panel 1-2: Same setting/layout as the previous page. The singing is stopped when the two of them lock eyes and realize that they’re singing at the same time. They each show equal degrees of embarrassment, leading to the two of them in Panel 2 to look away with Henry being the first one to take off his headphones.
Panel 3: Cut to a front shot of the young man a few moments later as he looks back again toward Melanie’s direction. The glint of red on his cheeks from the previous panel’s embarrassment can be seen dangling over his neck like a necklace as he speaks.
HENRY [half-grin, to Melanie]: Sorry about that, I…I like to sing to myself sometimes when I'm alone!
Panel 4: We move back to Ms. Haynes in the same type of front shot as the previous panel, showing off the top half of her body. She is seen reaching over to turn off her iPod as she speaks with a slightly understanding look on her face.
TEENAGE MELANIE [to Henry]: A little cheesy, but understandable. It’s an awesome song…though not as great as “Starman” or “The Jean Genie” or…pretty much anything he’s ever done.
Panel 5: Back to a shot of Henry in the same setting and layout as Panel 3. He has the can of soda in hand, raised just a small distance away from his lips as he speaks. The smile on his face is a little wider compared to what we saw at that moment, denoting a more relaxed tone in demeanor that he’s developed over time.
HENRY: I knew I wanted to be an actor when I first saw Bowie in Labyrinth. I never knew his music till I bought a copy of Young Americans at Tower Records on Sahara.
Panel 6: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. A few moments after what took place in Panel 5, after taking the sip, he tilts the can back onto the off-panel tray. His eyes are focused squarely in Melanie’s direction with a degree of unease that tinges with self-confidence underneath the nerves.
HENRY [Cont.]: So…I own a copy of The Man Who Fell to Earth. If you want to…maybe you can come over and watch it with me Friday?
