Page 9, 7 Panels- Lunchroom, Durango High School
Panel 1-2: A two-part set of panels that move back to Melanie on her side of the table. She is clearly creeped out by the context she senses hidden within the previous statement. In Panel 2, she grabs both ends of the tray as if she’s about to stand up and leave at that moment.
TEENAGE MELANIE [Panel 1]: Wow that took a…predictably creepy turn. TEENAGE MELANIE [Cont., Panel 2]: You’re a nice guy with good taste in music and all, but-- HENRY [interjecting, Panel 2]: It's not a date thing, of course!
Panel 3: Back to Henry on his side of the table. He’s quickly stood up from his chair, looking to defuse the situation as best as he can. You can see a section of the lunchroom behind him in the background, along with the moving left to right and right to left of other students, as he speaks.
HENRY [Cont. genuine though fumbling awkwardly for the words, to Melanie]: Not that I don’t think you’re beautiful or anything. I just…I thought we could be friends. I don’t know that many Bowie fans here, even among my choir and theatre friends. And I figured you would…I mean..
Panel 4-5: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. He clears his throat and shakes his head in Panel 4, moving away from the line of thought he was going to institute at that point. Then, in Panel 5, Henry extends his hand toward Melanie in a sign of friendship.
HENRY [Cont., Panel 4]: Let’s start over! HENRY [half-smile, Panel 5]: I’m Henry. TEENAGE MELANIE [Off-Panel, Panel 5]: Melanie… HENRY [Panel 5, Bubble 2]: Nice to meet you. TEENAGE MELANINE [Panel 5, Bubble 2]: Same.
Panel 6: Cut back to Melanie in the same setting and layout we left here in in Panel 2. She has spent a bit of time thinking it over, which has resulted in a slight softening of her demeanor compared to when we saw her last, and starts to sit back down as she speaks.
TEENAGE MELANIE [Cont., agreeing to the premise; to Henry]: What we did now—a little lunchtime Bowieoke—that's not a bad place to start.
Panel 7: We move back to Henry doing the same thing on his side of the table. He’s visibly relieved by the move as he speaks, allowing himself to widen the smile a little more than previously. You can see his tray down in the bottom of the panel view.
HENRY: Sounds great. I gotta warn you though—I’ve been singing since Elementary school. So don’t be alarmed if I kick your butt when we do this again tomorrow.

Panel 1: Back to Melanie with both hands wrapped around the burrito just a split second before she’s about to take a bite. She looks over at Henry with a curious eyebrow at the statement from earlier.
TEENAGE MELANIE [scoffing laugh, to Henry]: You did hear me sing just a little while ago, right? I may be a computer geek, but after 4 years of church choir, I can hold my own…
Panel 2-3: A two-part set of panels that moves things back to the same side shot of the two of them that we saw back at the end of Page 7. The two of them share a nice laugh in Panel 2 while taking a bite from what remains of their food. Then it moves to silent by the time we reach Panel 3.
HENRY [through full mouth, to Melanie; Panel 2]: Just giving a fair warning…buddy! Start with Hunky Dory? TEENAGE MELANIE [to Henry, Panel 2]: Sounds hunky dory to me!
Panel 4: Cut to a shot of the two of them from the window of Henry’s house weeks later sitting next to each other and watching the movie. You can see a little section of the living room through the window, with the kitchen behind them in the background. There’s also a slice of the house’s exterior that’s visible in the panel view, showing off a typical desert motif for those who live in the area.
CAPTION: [shows the opening four measures to “Venus: The Bringer of Peace” for the Flute and Oboe section]
Panel 5: We move to an interior shot of what we saw at the center of the previous panel, showing Melanie laughing and enjoying the movie at that point. There’s a nervous and somewhat smitten gaze from the young Mr. Austin looking on while he laughs at that point.
CAPTION: [shows the next four opening measures of the Flute and Oboe in “Venus: The Bringer of Peace”]
