Jones St., Chapter 1: Pages 13-14

Page 13, 5 Panels- Hallway/TVs, Best Buy, Las Vegas Nevada

Panel 1: We move back to a side shot of the two of them as they near the end of the hallway going back into the main store. They are in the same configuration in terms of the panel that we saw near the end of the previous page. Jayson has his arm around her shoulder in a sympathetic manner as she speaks.

JAYSON [Cont., to Melanie]: But I wouldn’t be a good friend if I didn’t at least ask, just in case you were... MELANIE [scoffs, to Jayson]: Suicidal? JAYSON [Bubble 2]: I was gonna say morose…!

Panel 2: Cut to a close-up on Jayson a moment later, taken from the side as the two of them walk out side-by-side. He continues on his thought with a bit of sad remembrance of the past mixed with hope over what had happened since. You can see an assembly of TVs of various sizes over his shoulder and behind him in the background as he speaks.

JAYSON [Cont.]: Cass and I’ve already seen you at ‘suicidal.’ We’d rather you not go back down that road again.

Panel 3: We move back to Melanie who nods in agreement to the sentiment, glancing over in her friend’s direction with a touch of a smile on her face. You can see behind her a small gathering of portable DVD players as well as standard Blu-Ray and 4k Blu-Ray players that are on display behind her in the background.

MELANIE: No worries there, long as I got friends like you.

Panel 4-5: Back to Jayson in the same setting and layout as Panel 2. His smile is a little wider in Panel 4, and he chuckles heartily at the statement. Then, in Panel 5 a few beats later, Jayson turns his attention to one little detail that just popped into his mind. In the backgrounds of both panels, you can see a little more of the TV section in movement in Panel 4 and then stationary by the time we reach Panel 5.

JAYSON [Panel 4]: As long as you keep the Bud and bagels flowing, girl, I’m there. On a separate note... MELANIE [interjects, Off-Panel; Panel 4]: You're not gonna try and set me up with another guy? JAYSON [Panel 4, Bubble 2]: I know it's weird, but he's a decent guy from my improv class. And he's also a comic nerd, so you got that going for you. MELANIE [sighs, Panel 5]: I'll think about it... JAYSON [Panel 5]: Fair enough. As for tonight...I should be there same time as last year?

Panel 1: Cut to a frontal action shot of Ms. Haynes’ face shortly after her friend’s taken his arm off her shoulder. You can see, by the shadow that he casts from the left of the panel view that the two of them are still walking side by side. Though there’s a gap that starts to form between them as they begin to split toward different directions.

MELANIE [half-grin, to Jayson]: Hell yeah, Jay! Pizza and drunk karaoke with you and Cass is the best part of this tear inducing, shitty day.

Panel 2: Back to Jayson as he looks over his shoulder, standing in front of a big-screen TV playing footage from a soccer game. He looks back in Melanie’s direction with a playful demeanor in his face, and an even brighter grin on his face.

JAYSON [witty, to Melanie]: Aww, Mel—didn’t know you loved my singing that much!

Panel 3: Back to Melanie a few moments later in mid-stride. The layout behind her changes compared to Panel 1, showing the tail end of the display that we saw in the previous page. She laughs hysterically at the comment while still looking back in her friend’s direction for one last remark.

MELANIE [fires back]: No, it’s ‘cause you’re funny as fuck when you’re drunk. And honestly…

Panel 4: Cut to minutes later of Ms. Haynes hard at work in the video game section of the store. She’s seen talking with a father and his daughter over one of the Xbox One games, though we don’t hear precisely what is being said at the moment. You can see the DVDs in the distance in the background, along with one of the cashier stations.

MELANIE [Cont., caption]: I could use the spiritual boost.

Panel 5-6: We move to another shot of Melanie in action, hanging around the phones section of the store and observing the customers all around her and waiting for the right time to chime in and help. In Panel 6, she looks over at an old man near the Samsung display and walking over to help her. In the top of the panel views of each panel, you can hear the music being played in the store at that time, coming in the form of musical notes.
