Jones St., Chapter 1: Pages 17-18
Page 17, 5 Panels- Front Entrance, FDH Building, UNLV Campus
Panel 1: Cut to a birds-eye view shot of the FDH Building, which houses UNLV’s Theatre Department, minutes later. You can see the afternoon sun illuminating the main lobby area in front of the building, along with the people who are walking either inside or outside at this point. You can also see, to the left of the panel view, a little part of the upper most area of the stairs.
JAYSON [Off-Panel caption]: Be careful, Mel. You got my number on your phone, right? MELANIE [Off-Panel caption 2]: Yeah, 'course I do. But he's my best friend, odds are it's probably nothing big. JAYSON [Off-Panel caption 3]: Still...be careful!
MELANIE [Off-Panel caption 4]: I will...
Panel 2: Action shot taken from a few steps inside the building of Ms. Haynes as she arrives to one of the glass doors as she approaches them. You can see the rear outline of what appears to be a sheet of paper taped on the door, showing the reader the top half of her body as she walks.
Panel 3: We move to a side shot moments later, pressing gently against the metal bar that serves as its handle. She looks over and notices the writing on the piece of paper, which is only partially visible to the reader at this point.
Panel 4: Cut to a profile shot of the message in question through the glass of the window, taken from Melanie’s perspective as she is reading it. It read in big black letters “Take a chance on me…” with “Black Box Theatre” underneath it.
Panel 5: We move to a shot of Melanie’s visibly befuddled face upon reading the statement, trying to determine the meaning. You can see a little patch of light blue from the sky behind her in the background as she speaks.
MELANIE: There's a dent to the optimism!

Panel 1: Cut to a few moments later of the young Ms. Haynes moving through the long hallway; her eyes looking out for the large sign that gets her to the theatre’s double doors. You can see a callboard along with a few doors belonging to faculty members in the background as well as a hallway to another classroom.
Panel 2-3: A two-part set of panels that move to a close-up on her face, searching in Panel 2 for the sign. In Panel 3, moments later, her focus is pulled to the sound of a voice coming from down the hall. In both panels, you can also see her confusion steadily grow as the seconds pass by.
PERSON [Off-Panel, to Melanie; Panel 3]: Are you Melanie? MELANIE [to Person, Panel 3]: Mmm-hmm…
Panel 4: Cut to the person in question, a young woman dressed in a pair of jeans and a black T-shirt (aka the costume of the Stage Manager). She’s standing in front of a pair of black metal double doors with a smile on her face. As she speaks, you can see her right arm already pressing down on the metal bar as if ready to welcome Melanie inside. Above the doors, you can also see a plaque that reads “Black Box Theatre.”
PERSON: He’s right through these doors!
Panel 5-6: A two-part set of panels that moves to a birds-eye shot of the theatre’s interior. A stream of light can be seen from the doorway in Panel 5, providing the only illumination as Mel walks inside toward the center stage area. Then, as the song starts in Panel 6, you can see a spotlight suddenly turn on, brightening the performing space around her just as she stops, and surprising her for a split second.
HENRY [singing, Off-Panel; Panel 6]: But of all these friends and
lovers There is no one compares with
you…
