Jones St., Chapter 3: Pages 7-8
Page 7, 5 Panels- Melanie's Apartment, Las Vegas NV
Panel 1-3: A three-part set of panels that focuses on Ms. Haynes in a montage set-up as she pieces her breakfast together (also a bowl of cereal) and the milk alongside it. You can see the cabinets of the small looking kitchen in the background, along with some bags of bread and chips on the counter and the laptop placed in front of it as well as the refrigerator door in Panel 1. All the while, off-panel in each three of these panels, you can hear the sound of crunching followed by a slurping sound in Panel 3 as Cassie finishes up.
CASSIE [Off-Panel, with full mouth; Panel 2]: No, no no! C'mon... CASSIE [Off-Panel; Panel 2, Bubble 2]: Stupid piece of garbage! MELANIE [to Cassie, Panel 3]: Finally giving up on that busted up iPhone 5.
Panel 4: Back to Cassie at the table as she places the now empty cereal bowl down on the table once again. Her free hand is grabbing her phone, which has started to glitch and get buggy. You can see the level of frustration on her face at what happened as she speaks.
CASSIE [slight nod, to Melanie]: I was hoping the old girl could hold out till the iPhone 8 came out. But ya know...2017! I'd buy one myself, but my shift starts in an hour and I have band practice later tonight...
Panel 5: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. Her expression and body language brightens up slightly upon an idea that pops into her head. She glances over in Melanie's direction just as she's about to take her place on the chair next to her; her shadow appears in view around the left of the panel view.
CASSIE [Cont.]: Maybe you can pop by Best Buy and buy me a new one before meeting that Crosby guy. MELANIE [annoyed groan, Off-Panel] CASSIE [Bubble 2]: It doesn't have to be the one you work in. Just one you can use your employee discount.
Page 8, 6 Panels- Melanie's Apartment, Las Vegas NV
Panel 1-2: A two-part set of panels that focuses squarely on Melanie seated on a chair near Cassie. In Panel 1, she pours in the Honey Nut Cheerios into another bowl, followed by a good portion of milk into it by the time we reach Panel 2. It's in this panel that we see her glancing over in her friend's direction.
MELANIE [shakes her head, Panel 1]: I don't know...I'm already there 6 days a week. I'd rather have a day without the big blue box for once. Also--you know I'm saving money to move to the Valley next year. CASSIE [Off-Panel, Panel 1]: I'll pay ya back my next payday (or over the next 3 paydays anyway). Also...whenever Lindsay Stirling's coming to Vegas, I'll get you front row tickets. MELANIE [intrigued, Panel 2]: Hmm...okay, I'll do it. CASSIE [Off-Panel, Panel 2]: Excellent...
Panel 3: Cut to Cassie at the sink dropping her dishes inside it with a wide, relieved smile on her face. Her gaze is split between her friend and the door as she speaks. You can see a section of the kitchen, including the refrigerator, as well as part of the hallway leading to the front door in the background.
CASSIE [Cont.]: I should split before I get swallowed up in traffic...good luck at the meeting.
Panel 4-5: A two-part set of panels that moves back on Melanie a few moments later seated in the same place as the start of the page; the jug of milk placed to the right of the spoon and cereal bowl. In Panel 4, she nods and waves goodbye to her friend as she leaves. Then, in Panel 5 moments later, the young woman grabs the milk by its handle and starts to stand up from the chair as the door closes off-panel.
MELANIE [to Cassie, Panel 4]: Thanks. See ya tonight, budette! SOUND EFFECT [Off-Panel, Panel 5]: CLICK!
Panel 6: Action shot of Ms. Haynes from the back placing the milk back in the refrigerator moments later. You can see the sparseness of food inside the various cabinets inside as well as bottles of beer and a half-drunk bottle of champagne around the lower level of the appliance, just next to where she ends up placing the milk.
MELANIE [narration caption]: There's that nagging feeling again- the Shit.
