Jones St., Chapter 3: Pages 19-20
Page 19, 7 Panels- Melanie's Car, Las Vegas NV
Panel 1-2: A two-part set of panels that moves to an interior shot of Melanie in the driver's seat a minute later. In Panel 1, the key is in the ignition and ready to turn it on once more. In Panel 2, a second later, she looks over toward the engine in the direction of a weird sound coming from there, like the sound of metal dice in a cup.
MELANIE [to herself, Panel 2]: What was that? MELANIE [dismissive; Panel 2, Bubble 2]: Probably nothing...
Panel 3: Cut to a shot of the same type of layout as the previous panel. You can see, by the rear window in the background, that the setting has changed to S. Maryland Parkway as she continues on the road; the sight of another car a few feet behind her in that rear window area. As for the sound, it's slightly louder and more noticeable than it was in Panel 2.
MELANIE [still optimistic]: It'll smooth itself out...
Panel 4: Same layout as the previous panel. The setting behind and all around her changes as the car has reached the corner of East Desert Inn Road and Swenson Street. The mystery noise in the engine area has started to fade, replaced by the sound of Public Enemy coming from the speakers of her car.
MELANIE [smiling ear to ear]: I knew it would clear up! Now, to psyche myself up with some Chuck D before I get to MadHouse.
Panel 5-7: A three-part set of panels that moves on the same layout as the previous panel. Each panel takes place in different sections of the road going to the coffeehouse. Panel 5 is between the Paradise Road turnoff and the Las Vegas Street turnoff going into the Strip. Panel 6 comes in as she moves underneath Las Vegas Freeway and I-15; the mystery sound coming back in spades. And in Panel 7, a few minutes later near S. Valley View Blvd., the sound (which overshadows the music) is followed by the sight of smoke in front of her.
MELANIE [Cont., Panel 5]: I'm actually making pretty good time. I should be there in plenty of... MELANIE [notices the noise, Panel 6]: Oh crap! Crap crap crap... MELANIE [defeated anger, Panel 7]: CRAAPP! MELANIE [caption, Panel 7]: "Had to jinx it...!"
Page 20, 6 Panels- Crown Auto Services, S. Valley View Blvd., Las Vegas NV
Panel 1: Cut to a shot of Ms. Haynes on the phone seated in one of the waiting room at Crown Auto Services, waiting for the person she's calling to pick up. You can see the beige wall behind her in the background, as well as the edges of a large pile of magazines placed on the end table next to her.
CAPTION: Crown Auto Services Five Minutes Later MELANIE [Cont., to herself]: Now it's in the damn shop, for who knows how long! I can kiss the coding gig goodbye... SOUND EFFECT [from the phone]: RINNG...RING... MELANIE [Bubble 2]: Unless I can convince Mr. Crosby to be a little merciful to my situation--fingers crossed!
Panel 2: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. A handful of moments later, she becomes a little more animated upon getting someone on the other line; a brief smile coming across her face. At the same time, you can see her eyes glancing over in the direction of a stranger off-panel walking past her at that moment.
MELANIE [relieved]: Hi, Mr. Crosby. This is Melanie Haynes. We spoke on the phone this morning...I'm good. Well, I was until my car decided to crap out on me...South Valley View Road, yeah. How long?...I'm not sure how long it'll take, but...yeah. Probably not.
Panel 3-4: A two-part set of panels that moves on the same setting and layout as the previous panel. Melanie glances over at the magazines in Panel 3 as she speaks, seeing what the covers on them look like; her free left hand touching the edge of them ever so gently without actually picking them up. Then, in Panel 4, she pushes herself up off the chair and starts to move toward the right of the panel view.
MELANIE [Cont., Panel 3]: I was hoping that maybe we could have the interview here over the phone...Yeah, I've got plenty of time. It's probably gonna be a little while longer before I hear back from the mechanic. MELANIE [thinking, Panel 4]: Well, I currently work the Helpdesk over at Best Buy...7 years, give or take...I deal with computers and the stupid humans who own them. I also help out with normal Sales Associate stuff too like stocking and helping customers out...How did I get into computers?
Panel 5: Action shot of Melanie walking across the relatively small waiting area, which is seen in a wider context compared to the rest of the page, leaving her messenger bag at her chair. It's here that we see a few other people seated in the same way that Ms. Haynes had been, reading or watching the TV that is visible in the upper left corner of the panel view.
MELANIE [Cont.]: I guess I got into it when I was 11 and my dad bought me my first computer. One of those massive iMac things, the ones with the dayglow looking covering. It cost him a ton, but man was it awesome. I called it Gina...After Gina Torres, of course!
Panel 6: Cut to a slight close-up of her standing in front of a vending machine, which is partially visible to the right of the panel view enough to surmise the individual candies and potato chip bags visible through the glass. As she speaks, you can see her hand move toward her pocket in order to pull out her wallet.
MELANIE: I think my Mom stuffed it in a box in the attic when we switched computers before I got to high school. Anyway...that's also when I started to get into coding.
