Jones St., Chapter 6: Pages 5-6

Page 5, 6 Panels- EPB Bookstore/Myers’ Apartment, Jones St./Past Jones St., Las Vegas NV

Panel 1: Cut to a shot of Randall back in the present inside the bookstore, centered primarily on his face. The background behind him has changed compared to when we last saw him in the middle of the previous page, containing a mix of other bookcases from different sections of the store to signify his forward movement from his office to his son.

RANDALL [to Tara]: You remember what your mom told you when we got back home?

Panel 2: We move to a flashback close-up of Tanya standing in what appears to be Tara’s bedroom, given the similarity in the color of the walls and the door which are similar to what we saw in earlier scenes in his room. She’s in her late 40s at this point, flashing an empathetic smile that comes from years of good and bad days involving her son.

TANYA [to Middle School Tara, trying to look on the bright side of it]: That first minute was really good…

Panel 3: Back to Randall in the present day; the setting and layout similar to what we saw in Panel 1, though without the rush of action that we saw then. He chuckles heartily at the off-panel reminiscing about that particular point in time, flashing a bright smile that spans from cheek to cheek on his face.

RANDALL [shakes his head]: No, no. What she said after that.

Panel 4: Same setting as Panel 2, along with the same background. We pick up a handful of moments later with Tanya taking a seat next to a visibly distraught Tara with reddened eyes; her arm perched over her son’s shoulder to dispense with a nugget of wisdom to her son.

TANYA: It looks bad now. But what happens next after this, well...it can only get better. Or slightly less painful.

Panel 5-6: A two-part set of panels that move back to the present in a similarly laid out shot of Randall with his arm over his son’s shoulder, looking out at the street in front of them. They share a nice father-son moment with equally misty eyes, remembering their late wife/mother. It’s in these panels that we see, for the first time, the pair of shorts, tennis shoes, and long sleeved shirt that he’s wearing as this scene has gone on.

RANDALL [to Tara, Panel 5]: You're gonna be fine. Just be yourself, the good and the bad. If she runs away from the bad…odds are it wouldn't have been that good. TARA [slight grin, Panel 5]: Thanks Dad… RANDALL [Panel 6]: Love you…! TARA [Panel 6]: Love you too…!

Panel 1: We move to a side shot minutes later of Tara in the Mini on his way to the restaurant. His hands are gripped at the top of the steering wheel, staring out at the road in front of him in his own thoughts. You can see the road moving at a fast pace from right to left in the background from the driver's side window.

TARA [thought bubble]: If I remember my rom-coms correctly, this is usually the moment in the first date when--

Panel 2: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. A second later, he quickly shakes his head, dismissing the thought just before it could materialize. You can see his hands start to turn right into the parking lot to the pub as he thinks.

TARA [Cont., thought bubble]: No, this isn't a first date. We said specifically last night that it wasn't a first date. This...is just a first meet-up, an initial face-to-face feel out.

Panel 3-4: A two-part set of panels that are very stylized action shots of the two of them outlining different outcomes. In Panel 3, we see Tara and Melanie romantically kissing at the a pedestrian bridge between City Center and Planet Hollywood. In Panel 4, it involves the two of them splitting apart with a broken heart in between them.

TARA [narration caption, Panel 3]: One that'll either lead to the start of a really beautiful relationship... TARA [Cont. narration caption, Panel 4]: Or yet another reason why dating is the absolute worst. Either way--

Panel 5: Cut to an action shot of Tara, after he's parked, stepping out of the car in the evening sky. His left hand gently touching the top of the car's hood, while he looks over to the left of the panel in the direction of Tate's. You can see a patch of the starry skies above him in the top of the panel view.

TARA [thought bubble]: ...I'm definitely not telling her about the Asexual thing. Not yet, at least.
