Jones St., Chapter 6: Pages 13-14
Page 13, 5 Panels- Tate's, Jones St., Las Vegas NV
Panel 1: Back to Melanie specifically in the same setting and layout as her last appearance in the middle of the previous page; the menu now gone from view. She reaches over and grabs the glass of scotch located on the bottom left corner of the panel view. You can see the background of the dining area behind her change with the normal flow of the restaurant as before.
MELANIE [curious, to Tara]: So, Tara--how did you get your name?
Panel 2: Cut to Tara a few beats later at the other side of the table. He flashes her a rather quizzical look at Ms. Haynes question; the menu also gone from view as was the case in Panel 1. You can see the wall behind him in the background along with his energy bar, which is now at 63%.
TARA [slightly confused, to Melanie]: I thought I told you about that.
Panel 3-4: Same setting/layout as Panel 1. In Panel 3, the young woman nods while taking another sip from her drink glass. In the next panel, moments later, we see her place the glass back down on the table, carrying on with the rest of her thought at that point in time.
MELANIE [Panel 3]: You did. I mean... MELANIE [Cont., Panel 4]: Who came up with the idea?
Panel 5: Back to Tara in the same setting/layout as Panel 2. His face shifts from confusion to acceptance at the explanation, flashing a slight grin. You can see a little glint of tears in his eyes as he speaks.
TARA: Ah. Well...it was my mom who came up with the name.
Page 14, 6 Panels- Hospital Room/Living Room/Tate’s, Hospital/Myers’ Apartment/Jones St., Las Vegas NV/27 Years Ago
Panel 1: We move to a flashback 27 years ago of Randall and Tanya in the hospital room. They each talk with one another, though we don’t hear any of it at this point; baby Tara curled up in a little blanket snuggly in his mother’s arms. You can see a little section of the bedstand and the wall behind them in the background.
CAPTION: 27 Years Ago (Give or Take Some Months) TARA [Cont. narration caption]: They went through six different names, they told me, from the hospital all the way back home. Roberto, Danny, Sunny, Freddie, Ziggy-- MELANIE [interjecting, narration caption 2]: Ziggy? TARA [narration caption 3]: My parents are Bowie fans--grandparents too. Anyway, none of the names they had seemed to fit well.
Panel 2: Cut to a week later with the two of them watching TV in their bedroom; the glow of the off-panel TV screens bathing both of them, wrapped in bedsheets at this point, in white. You can see a little more illumination from the lamp near her as well as off-panel right where Tara’s crib is. You can also see Randall looking on with an equally approving feel to the idea.
TARA [Cont. narration caption]: Then it came to her one night when they were in bed. She told him (at least according to my mom’s story) that… TANYA [to Randall]: If our little boy is a piece of both us, why not represent that in his name?
Panel 3: The following morning, in the kitchen, we see Tanya and abuela Olivia arguing with one another; the glow of the morning sun coming in from the window that is visible coming from off-panel right. You can see the back of baby Tara’s head as he drinks milk from his mother’s left breast.
TARA [Cont. narration caption]: When my abuela worried that I might get teased for my "girly" name, she replied— TANYA [to Olivia]: There's nothing shameful about him...why should he feel any for his name?
Panel 4: We move back to a present day shot of Melanie back at the table at Tate’s. She appears genuinely touched by the tale, flashing a little section of a grin toward him. You can see her glass of scotch is nearly empty at this point, just waiting for a refill.
MELANIE [to Tara]: She sounds like a genuinely boss woman.
Panel 5-6: Back to Tara with a sheepish, slightly sad yet sort of happy look on his face. The table place in front of him is in the same position that was in back in the previous page. In Panel 6, he looks up and nods slightly as the arm of the waiter comes into the shot, delivering his Diet Dr. Pepper in a crystal glass.
TARA [to Melanie]: Yeah. Yeah she was… WAITER [Off-Panel, to Tara]: Here’s your Diet Dr. Pepper, sir.
MELANIE [Off-Panel]: What happened to her, if I may ask?
