Jones St., Chapter 8: Pages 17-18
Page 17, 6 Panels- Third Inning, Cashman Field, Las Vegas NV
Panel 1: Cut to a shot of the batter's box in the middle of the game itself. We see Matt Reynolds connect onto a pitch from Tyler Beede (who is seen closer to the foreground of the panel view); the near full crowd in the background behind him. You can see the ball quickly shoot over to the right in the area of the shortstop.
TARA [caption, left of the panel view]: So are you a big baseball fan? MELANIE [caption 2, next to caption 1 on the right-center side]: Kinda, yeah. I actually got into it through my Mom. TARA [caption 3, same area underneath caption 1]: Oh cool! What was she like? MELANIE [caption 4, same area underneath caption 2]: Fiercely independent, awesome sense of humor. She's a huge Angels fan...had a massive crush on Albie Pearson back in the day. She actually covered the team for years before we had to move to Vegas for financial reasons when I was 8. My dad thinks the reason they got married was because he looked so much like him.
Panel 2-3: A two-part set of panels that follows the ball as it goes over to the Rivercats SS Orlando Calixte, tossing the ball to the 2B Christian Arroyo who comes in in Panel 3 to step on the bag for the force-out on the 51's RF Brandon Nimmo. In the background of both shots, along with the grass of the outfield bleacher area, you can see the scoreboard with the Box Score denoting that the game is tied 2-2 at this point.
MELANIE [Cont. caption, Panel 2]: She was there when they won the World Series in 2002, cheering her ass off in Row 27A with screws in her knee. TARA [caption 2, next to Melanie's caption; Panel 2]: Really? MELANIE [caption, Panel 3]: Yep. For me, I just like the pure math of the game.
Panel 4: Cut to a close-up of Melanie's face a second later in the middle of the pause in play as the next batter, Amed Rosario, starts to move to the batter's box. You can see a few notes of the walk-up music from the right of the panel view just as it ends, along with the night sky and the fronts of other fans seated next to her in the background as she speaks.
MELANIE [Cont., to Tara]: So, how did your parents meet?
Panel 5: Back to Tara seated next to her a few moments later, flashing a sheepish grin that is tinged with a touch of nostalgic melancholy that pops out as he speaks. The background is similar to what we saw of Ms. Haynes in the previous panel, showing a different section of people seated in their section of the ballpark.
TARA [to Melanie]: They met at a Who concert in L.A. a long time ago. Just randomly ran into each other in the audience, and struck up a conversation. Then they went to a taco place and...sparks! TARA [Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 6, Bubble 1]: Yeah. Like the rain scene in "The Notebook," ya know...sparks. Perfect.
Panel 6: Back to Melanie in the same setting/layout as Panel 4; the musical notes fade away from view on the right side. She flashes a slight smile to the first part of the story; her hands placed on her lap. In the background, you can hear the sound of the ball hitting the catcher's glove.
MELANIE: "Sparks?" MELANIE [Bubble 2]: Sounds sweet...

Panel 1-2: A two-part set of panels that moves back to Tara in the same setting/layout as the second-to-last panel of the previous page. In Panel 1, he nods in a simple, subtle fashion to Ms. Haynes' comment from the end of Page 17, giving a little smile too as he speaks. In Panel 2, the young Mr. Myers stops talking upon the sound of the bat connecting into the next pitch.
TARA [agreeing, Panel 1]: It really was, yeah. After the show they went to a taco place and... SOUND EFFECT [Off-Panel right, Panel 2]: CRACK!
Panel 3: Cut to a shot of the baseball moments later after it leaves Mr. Rosario's bat; a speck in the night sky traveling in the direction of the right centerfield bleachers. You can hear the roar of the crowd growing in noise and intensity, anticipating the end result of the previous action.
Panel 4: Back to Tara in the same setting and layout as Panel 2, moments later as the cheering reaches its peak. You can see by the pained look on the young man's face that the noise is affecting him in a negative way; the background behind him shows the bottoms of a handful of fans behind him, cheering the home run.
MELANIE [Off-Panel to Tara, concerned]: Tara...?
Panel 5: Action shot that widens the layout and setting from earlier, showing Tara standing up and making his way down the row in a hurry. Melanie glances over in the young man's direction with a great deal of concern as this happens; the only person there who evens notices as the rest of the crowd continues the roar of applause from earlier.
TARA [regretful and pained, looking out toward the section entrance off-panel]: S--Sorry. I--I need a minute!
