Ghost Signals, Episode 7: Part 4.1
JARYD (Cont.) Or Three Angels, as the locals cutely call it. My apologies Captain Riggs couldn't join us, as she's currently... (notices Steggy) You are new. What's your name?
STEGGY Aye, name's Steggy- I'm their computer generated AI. I was on the ship when you first met my mates.
JARYD Ah, a hologram. Fascinating. My name's Jaryd. (shakes Steggy's hand) I can actually touch your hand. How is that possible?
STEGGY Crystalline matrix core- helps me manage tangibility depending on the situation. (handshake stops; the four of them walk over to the elevator) Also a fun party trick!
RAIVEN (curious, to Jaryd) Why is the town called Three Angels?
JARYD It stems from an ancient fable, during the Chaos. Three women gazed down from the heavens at a barren piece of land and created a sanctuary for the forgotten and "unimportant." I have a copy of it in my library if you want to read it.
RAIVEN (giddy) Sounds like my kind of fun!
AC SECOND CLASS DEZ-LEI (chiming in, to Jaryd) Where the hells is the dining area? I haven't eaten a thing since those flat orange crunchy things before leaving the shelter at dawn.
JARYD (to AC Second Class Dez-Lei, pointing the way) The Communal Space is along the way to my apartment. I'd be happy to drop you off there.
CUT TO:
INT. ROAD OUTSIDE COMMUNAL SPACE, SECTION 1, THREE ANGELS- A Short Time Later
A shot of an electric vehicle setting off from the communal space; the back of the soldier to the camera as she sets off inside.
CUT TO:
INT. CAR- Minutes Later
The good Doctor and Jaryd sitting in the front seat of the automated car. Raiven is seen looking out at the window as they pass by a series of similarly sculpted houses outside.
RAIVEN (impressed) The wohminn who founded this place-would've loved to have met them! (to Jaryd) How many houses are in this town of yours?
JARYD 3,000, housing a population of just over 5,500.
RAIVEN What type of support do you use, technically speaking?
JARYD Filtering system for the air and water, energy grid powered by the sun. Food wise, we have a farming system just below that provide our meal needs.
RAIVEN Wow! Now I definitely would've loved to meet these Three Angels.
JARYD (shakes their head) Actually, that was the standard technical baseline agreed by the old G20 nations under--
RAIVEN (interjecting, finishing the comment) Project Abeoa. I came across one of their probes a short time ago on my way to your planet.
JARYD (intrigued) Really? Do you happen to have it with you, by chance? (Raiven shakes her head; accepting) That's fine. We can discuss what was on it once we head home.
CUT TO:
INT. JARYD'S LIBRARY- Minutes Later
The two of them minutes later inside the Mayor's mini Ivy League-styled library; Jaryd looking through bookcases in the background. Dr. O'Ozahl, meanwhile, is in the center right of the shot reading a World History textbook from the late 21st century.
RAIVEN (while reading) I can see how your planet became so...barren. Wasn't there anyone who foresaw the danger beforehand?
JARYD Plenty did actually. The problem was many used that knowledge to become obscenely wealthy through the creation of technological stopgaps. In terms of substantive change, those in charge were quickly crippled to do better by a single word- how.
RAIVEN How did you come across all of this information, if I may ask?
JARYD Part of my duties as Mayor involve ownership and maintenance of this library. It's primarily ceremonial, "tending to who we were to inform who we will be." But in my view... (smiles) It's the best part of the job!
RAIVEN
(chuckles) I can empathize with the feeling. (closes the book)
JARYD Yeah...a lot of the texts paint us in a negative light, for very good reason. But there was a lot of good hidden amidst all of that. I imagine you've seen plenty of that in your journey thus far.
RAIVEN (chuckles) Oh yeah...I can show you a selection of Signals from my database, if you're so curious.
