Ghost Signals, Episode 8: Part 2.2

At this point, something catches her eye to her left off in the distance.

JARYD (V.O.) They're a secretive bunch, don't really broadcast when they'll gather to sermonize. There is a past Brethren member I could get you in touch with if you wish.

At the end of the line, Raiven breaks off from the group in the direction of the mystery person. It takes a few seconds for the others to notice her starting to leave.

AC SECOND CLASS DEZ-LEI Taking off already, Doctor?

RAIVEN (shakes her head) Just...caught something interesting. Or potentially interesting. I'll catch up in half an horut. (Raiven runs off)

JARYD (to AC Second Class Dez-Lei) Does your friend do that a lot?

AC SECOND CLASS DEZ-LEI (explanatory, to Jaryd) She's more of an acquaintance than friend, in honesty!

CUT TO:

EXT. PARK- Few Minutes Later

A young woman sitting on a beach, reading a book on a tablet; Raiven coming closer to her position over the course of a few moments. You can see the storefronts of a handful of stores in the background along with a small smattering of people going about their own lives.

RAIVEN (to the young woman)

Hello...Hello!

No answer from the young woman.

RAIVEN (again, but a little louder) HELLO!

Raiven stops walking a few steps away from her. After going through the same basic greeting in a number of other languages, an important truth suddenly dawns upon her.

RAIVEN You're unable to engage in auditory speech. (bends down to the woman's eye level, thinking to herself) What was that language that primarily involved hand...?

Before she finishes the rest of her question, the woman screams and immediately springs from her chair. The good Doctor tries to speak, but each time is interrupted by a flurry of fists that drive her for five feet.

Finally, she's able to grab hold of the woman's left wrist before landing another punch. She lets go a moment later and goes back to her calm, diplomatic tone from before.

RAIVEN (in rudimentary ASL) I mean you no harm. I merely wish to engage in simple conversation.

YOUNG WOMAN (pause, to Raiven) Why's your skin blue?

RAIVEN (stops ASL, relieved/ surprised) You can understand me...superb! (slight pause) Well. It's because I'm not from your planet. I came here on a big spaceship in order to--

YOUNG WOMAN (interjecting) Ya mean like the old movies they play at the Cin every week? (Raiven is surprised) I may be deaf, but I'm pretty good at reading lips.

RAIVEN I see. My apologies, Mizz...

YOUNG WOMAN Sorry for the less than friendly greeting.

RAIVEN No worries. It was a perfectly logical response.

YOUNG WOMAN So. What did you wanna talk to me about?

CUT TO:

INT. GASTROPUB- A Few Minutes Later

A shot of Raiven and the young woman sitting next to each other on a bar in a nice looking gastropub a short distance from where they were last time. You can hear the sounds of synth-fused rock & roll playing on the speakers off-screen.

YOUNG WOMAN You think I look like my great- great-great-great grandmother?

RAIVEN Potentially, yes.

YOUNG WOMAN And you believe this how?

RAIVEN The how of that would take a great deal of time to explain.

YOUNG WOMAN I'm not as stupid as my ancestors were. Tell it to me plainly.

RAIVEN Okay. (as she goes through her comm) It came courtesy of the work I did topside, using something of my creation called the Jahukagonis. It harnesses Ya'ahala energy your planet permeates naturally to reach back to a certain point in your timeline to create 3-D images.

A 3-D holographic image pops up a second alter, showing a snapshot of Renee and Mina taken from a previous examination point.

RAIVEN (Cont.) I saw you on the street, and your eyes are similar to ones that I saw during my research.

YOUNG WOMAN Fascinating. Sort of sounds like the Force.

RAIVEN "The Force?"

YOUNG WOMAN Another long story... (looks at the image deeper) Bad news, alien lady. That isn't my great-great-great-great grandmother.
