Rock The Vouhhn…!, Chapter 1: Part 1.3
Page 5 Panel 1: Back to Madison at her station a moment later with a sly half-smile; the tail end of her pondering moment coming to fruition. You can see her hand reaching over to the left in the direction of the phone as she thinks. MADISON (thought bubble) Just wild thoughts...maybe as a last resort. Panel 2: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. A moment later, we see her with a firm hold of the phone and pressed up to her ear. MADISON (Cont., thought bubble) Or a nice thought experiment back home. MADISON (speaking) Richard Carson...? Panel 3: Slight close-up on the young woman's face as she switches into performatively schmoozy mode upon getting the person on the other line. In the bottom of the panel, you can see a piece of paper on the desktop scrawled with scripted verbiage she uses throughout. MADISON Mr. Carson, this is Madison Mitchell at the Dearborn Democratic Party. You--You do? Of course you have. A Congressional candidate dies two weeks after winning a primary. Obviously that's gonna filter through. It must mean then you know what I'm gonna ask you. Panel 3: Same setting/layout as Panel 3. As she continues throwing her pitch to Mr. Carson, you can see a scale to the left of the panel view next to Ms. Thompson titled "SHOT AT A YES." At this point, it's at 50%. MADISON (Cont.) Long story short- we think, with your ties to the local business community, you could be just the person to finally take Rep. Jenkins down in November and bring in some solid progressive values to Dearborn County...Are you the first we've talked to? No, but I-- Panel 4: Same setting/layout as the end of the previous page. Her courteous demeanor shifts a few moments later to a defensive one, listening to his response. The scale meanwhile has quickly tilted to 22% MADISON Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Yeah, the polling wasn't great before the heart attack. But that's fluid. Once the message gets out, and the debates start to go on, they'll tighten up and we can start-- Panel 5: Same setting/layout as the end of the previous page. Her courteous demeanor shifts a few moments later to a defensive one, listening to his response. The scale meanwhile has quickly tilted to 22% MADISON Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Yeah, the polling wasn't great before the heart attack. But that's fluid. Once the message gets out, and the debates start to go on, they'll tighten up and we can start-- Page 6 Panel 1: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. Madison's body language shifts toward a mix of defensiveness and dejection, listening to Carson. At this point, the scale has hit 9%. MADISON I--I can't really guarantee you your own Campaign Manager. Duncan's been there since the primary, and it's still technically his show. But from what I've heard, he's a pro. I don't see why you guys couldn't be able to find a good balance once you're settled-- Panel 2: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. At this point, we see her accepting the rejection coming, glancing away from the paper for the first time since the conversation began; the phone looser from her ear than before, though still enough to hear it. The scale here is dead set at 0%. MADISON Right. Of course, it... (sighs) Thank you for your time. Can we still count on your donation, whoever ends up running-- Panel 3: Before she can finish the rest of her question, there's a single "CLICK!" from just below the receiver which is now firmly off of her ear. She closes her eyes tight, holding in the inner scream of rage burning inside her. The scale, meanwhile, has exploded in a big fireball. MADISON
(thought bubble) FUCK! Panel 4: Cut to an interior shot of Nate's apartment a few days later. We see him on the couch passed out asleep; the TV showing a random explosion from "Armageddon." From off-panel right, we hear a ringtone playing the opening tune to the Avengers theme. NATE (grumble moaning) Shnuhvma... Panel 5: A couple of seconds later, the young man is upright with his phone to his right ear; the desire for sleep painted clearly on his face as he speaks. NATE (weary, to Carol) I just got back an hour ago...this can't wait for the morning?! CAROL (from the receiver, to Nate) Adam called in sick fifteen minutes ago. I need you to cover his shift.
