Panel 1: Cut to a shot of her in a school library a short time later, reading over a thick textbook chronicling the history of the Senate. There’s also, on both sides of the panel, different political biographies from the distant past and most recent past stacked up neatly.
Caption (Cont., Madison)
I spent the remainder of that year absorbing every book on politics or politicians that I could find in an elementary school library.
Panel 2: Later that night, we see her at age 12 on the couch watching TV with the same rapt attention from the top of the previous page; a tablet resting on her lap. You can see photos of her parents on the wall as well as part of a screen door to the right.
Caption (Cont., Madison)
The rest I got from the internet and CSpan, when it was still over-the-air. It was then that I saw my political heroine…
Panel 3: Cut to a shot of the screen itself, which shows a floor speech of Hawaiian Senator Mazie Hirono. On the lower chyron of the screen, you can see that it’s part of a program called “CSpan Classic.”
Caption (Cont., Madison)
Mazie Hirono!
Panel 4: Back in the present, we see the young woman finish off the rest of the story; a section of the road visible somewhat in the left of the panel view. You can see a wide grin at the end of the story.
MADISON
After that, there was participating in student government and model UN in Middle and High Schools, and the rest...was history.
Panel 5: Cut to Zoe who is standing in the same edge of the street as her new friend Ms. Mitchell. You can see a little more of the road in this side shot as well as one of the loading trucks driving away.
ZOE
What post did you get in both?
ZOE
(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 6, Bubble 1)
Both times?
Panel 6: We move back to Madison in the same setting/layout as Panel 4. She chuckles, giving a sheepish smirk connected with her response; her hands placed inside her pockets.
MADISON
Secretary.
MADISON
(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 5, Bubble 2)
Yep, both times.

Panel 1: Cut back to Zoe in the same setting/layout as Panel 5 of the previous page. The answer from the end of the last page stuns her in a way that she hasn’t been prior to this point.
ZOE
(trying to find an answer)
And here you are, an active public face of a campaign for national office...which would make you either completely batty. Or possibly someone with a messianic complex.
Panel 2: We move to an action shot of Ms. Mitchell, merely shrugging her shoulders and letting out a bit of a chuckle at the statement from the previous panel.
MADISON
Life is funny sometimes…!
Panel 3: Cut to a shot of the road in the distance; the front of a car less than half a mile from their location, honking a deep horn that echoes in the distance. You can see the fronts of a few other cars behind them in the background going the same direction.
Panel 4: At this same moment, the director sees the car coming toward them and begins to walk over in that direction to greet them; her head turning casually back to the young woman for one last statement.
ZOE That’s my ride. We should hang out sometime...what’s your campaign schedule look like?
Panel 5: Cut to a close-up of Madison’s face a few beats later. She glances down toward the ground in a spurt of personal thought at the question.
MADISON
A little light mostly- just scripted photo-ops and glad handing...and a town hall over in Versailles. That one should be fun!
