Rock The Vouhhhnn!, Chapter 6: Part 1.3
Page 133 (Chapter 6, Page 5)
Panel 1: A short time later, we see Nate walking out of the building with a dejected look on his face; the side crumpled in his right hand. You can see a few other people on the margins of the panel heading inside the building at that moment.
NATE (thought bubble) On the plus side, I think I salvaged the audition mostly. And I didn’t vomit on the floor like I did when I auditioned for “Fiddler on the Roof” back in high school. Small victories, and a good building block for the next one.
Panel 2: Action shot minutes later showing Mr. Kelly stepping into his car set to drive back home. At the same moment, you can see his bag being tossed down onto the passenger seat.
Caption
(Cont., Nate) “If and when that happens.”
Panel 3: On the road a short time later, he looks out at the road trying to take his mind off the chaotic audition. The radio’s playing some funky Alt rock, which bubbles up from the middle bottom of the panel.
Panel 4: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. A beat later, the song is interrupted by the flat ringing indicating a phone call. He glances at the screen and flashes a look of relief, seeing the name that pops up.
NATE Ah, a well-timed distraction.
Panel 5: Cut to a shot of Carol’s office back at Target. She’s talking on speakerphone, looking over a schedule grid on her computer screen.
NATE
(Cont., through the receiver) Hey, Carol!
CAROL (to Nate) Hey Nate. I just talked to Diego over in Sporting Goods. His grandma’s going into surgery for spinal stenosis tomorrow, and is gonna need the next week to get her carer together.
Panel 6: Back to Nate in the same setting/layout as Panel 4. He nods affirmatively at the statement, though flashes an unsure look as to why it merits a phone call.
NATE Sorry for Diego to deal with that. Why are you calling me though? Seems fairly cut and dry.
Page 134 (Chapter 6, Page 6)
Panel 1: We move back to Carol zooming in to one section of the schedule; the setting and layout similar to what we saw in Panel 5 of the previous page.
CAROL
Well, it would mean swapping someone in with Sales experience from another department to fill in while Diego’s away. I have a few possibilities I’ve scouted so far, but I wanted to pick your brain in case I might have missed something.
Panel 2: Back to Nate in the car, pondering the question to himself after the course of a few moments. You can see the front of a car in the rearview mirror moving closer to the young man in the background of the panel.
NATE What about Manny or D’Andrea? I know they’re Cart Attendants. But they had some customer service experience when they were hired, and they’ve been itching for...
Panel 3: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. His thought is interrupted by the sound of a loud car horn emanating from the car we saw back in Panel 2.
NATE (to the car, looking panel right; annoyed) Really, dude? I’m going the speed limit! How the hells…?
CAROL
(from the receiver)
Nate?
NATE (Bubble 2, to Carol) Just a honk happy McConnell on the Freeway. You got the bulk of my message, right? I know the signal gets a little fritzy in this part of town.
Panel 4: We move back to Carol at the office, chuckling lightly at the comment from the end of Panel 3; her mind already flashing through the choices he gave her.
CAROL
Manny’s a bit green to go to a Sales floor just yet. D’Andrea did mention in her interview she played basketball in high school- might be worth the try.
Panel 5: Back to Nate nodding affirmatively at the tail end of her command. He glances back out on the road, ready to end the conversation and move on.
CAROL
(Cont., from the console) I’ll put the offer to her now. You can work on the revised schedule, send me what you got by tomorrow.
NATE Shouldn’t be a problem. Looks like the traffic’s clearing up.
Panel 6: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. A moment later, after ending the call, he slams his foot hard on the brake pedal upon seeing something on the road; his calm demeanor tensing up slightly over what he saw.
NATE
(Cont., thought bubble) Had to jinx myself!
Caption (Zoe) “It’s not a jinx!”
