Rock The Vouhhhnn!, Chapter 6: Part 3.1

Page 141 (Chapter 6, Page 13)

Panel 1: A two-part set of panels that moves back to Nate on the sidewalk as he reaches the other half of the sidewalk; sweat forming on the side of his face. You can see the building changing as he jogs from left to right in the panel view.

NATE How much does it pay?

RACHELLE (from the speaker)

Standard pay for a supporting role, plus a little extra in terms of Box Office. Which, given the lack of speaking roles in your career, I would say is a pretty good amount for you.

NATE

(Bubble 2)

I agree, and I’m in. When does filming start?

Panel 2: In part 2, a few moments later, we see him listening to Rachelle’s answer. Popping in from the right side of the panel, unbeknownst to the young man, is some type of machine shaped like a mailbox outside the Post Office.

RACHELLE (from the speaker)

Excellent! There’s still some issues regarding locations I need to square away. But I’m hopeful to start in about--

Panel 3: A split second later, we see him bump the side of his body into the big machine; his face grimacing in pain as a result.

Panel 4: On the ground, the young man rubs the side of his ribcage where he banged into it in the previous panel. You can see for the first time that the machine belongs to Postmates; different fast food logos faintly visible in the background of the main logo.

RACHELLE

(from the speaker)

Mr. Kelly?

NATE

(apologetic)

Sorry about that, Ms. Chen. Whomped into one of those floating meal pop-ups...should be fine.

RACHELLE

(Bubble 2, from the speaker)

The director’s name is Simon. I don’t have her E-Mail on me yet, but I’ll be happy to--

Panel 5: Same setting as the previous panel; the layout changing slightly as he gets back up on his feet. Before he continues with the rest of the statement, there’s another period of ringing from the speakers to interrupt.

NATE

(interjecting)

Umm. Things just suddenly got busy- can we finish the rest of this conversation a little later?

RACHELLE

(from the speaker)

Sure, no problem! It’ll give me time to get a copy of the script together, along with forms and the contact info for the director to get in touch with her properly.

NATE

(Bubble 2)

Sounds good…I’ll keep my eyes peeled for it.

Panel 1: A two-part set of panels that first focuses on the young man a short time later, taking the first few steps on the crosswalk that has turned green. He glances around the general area, wiping sweat with his right hand as he speaks.

NATE (to the earbuds)

Answer call…

Panel 2: In part 2, we move to another action shot of him approaching the midway part of the crosswalk. You can see the fronts of a smattering of cars on the street, waiting to continue driving.

CAROL

(from the speaker, to Nate)

Nate- hope I’m not catching you at a bad time.

NATE

(catching his breath, to Carol)

Just getting a quick jog in before dinner. What’s up? I’m guessing another store related emergency that needs me to sacrifice another day off.

CAROL

(from the speaker; Bubble 2)

You could say that...

Panel 3: We move to a shot of Carol standing outside of the store, which appears to be covered up in a massive see-through cube of some kind. You can see a couple of people in big white hazmat suits behind her in the background.

CAROL

(Cont.)

You remember the black moldy patch Anson caught on the ceiling above the Toys section last week?

Panel 4: Back to Nate in a close-up on his face as he enters the second half of the crosswalk. He nods subtly at the question, easily remembering the moment in question; the background of the shot behind him showing a smattering of other locals walking on the sidewalk both behind him and going the opposite way.

NATE

The one that looked like Big Bear Lake? Yeah, I remember. You finally found out what the hell that was?

CAROL

(from the speaker)

We did. And it’s not mold, Nate. It’s...

Panel 5: Cut to Carol in a similarly framed close-up back outside the store. You can see the deep sense of shock and sadness on her face as she finishes the rest of her statement.

CAROL

(Cont.)

It’s some type of fungal variation- a nasty one at that. The on-site physician said it was similar to a type of fungus that was connected to that flu outbreak up north a few years back.

Panel 6: Nate reacts to the news with a great deal of concern and shock, stepping on to the end of the crosswalk and back onto the sidewalk.

NATE Holy butts! Should--Shouldn’t you be tested? Or at least on your way to a fracking hospital, not yapping it up with me?!

CAROL

(chuckles, from the speaker)

They already tested me, and the whole store- we’re fine.
