Rock The Vouhhhnn!, Chapter 8: Part 1.2

Page 180 (Chapter 8, Page 3)

Panel 1: Zoe approaches the front door, meeting the Staffer halfway as he enters the room, albeit with the same apprehension and anxiety as the end of the previous page.

ZOE

Indeed we are…

STAFFER

(filling in the rest of the statement)

Obadiah.

ZOE

(Bubble 2)

Obadiah- your parents Amish or MCU fans?

OBADIAH

(Bubble 2)

Jeff Bridges fan, ma’am. And MCU as well.

ZOE

(Bubble 3) Kinda lowkey loving your parents. So, what’s your idea, Obie?

Panel 2: We move to a slight close-up a moment later on Obadiah. He’s stopped right in the middle of the floor; the door all but closed, save for a tiny sliver of an opening that’s visible in the background.

OBADIAH

A little while back, a friend and I went to this theatre festival in Indianapolis- I forget the name. Pretty good for local theatre, for the most part...

Panel 3: Cut to a similarly framed close-up on Ms. Olson. She’s following parts of it, but is not really enthused by the etchings of what she believes in her mind is the idea.

ZOE

You want us to hire a local actor to do Debate prep?

ZOE

(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 4, Bubble 1)

What was his play about?

Panel 4: Back to Obadiah in the same setting/layout as Panel 2. He’s a tiny bit less nervous than he has been throughout the scene as he speaks, and with a little bit of a defensive tone in his voice.

OBADIAH

Yeah. But he’s not a local actor- he’s from California, I think. He does act though. He wrote one of the better shows in the festival- Nathan Kelly.

OBADIAH

(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 3, Bubble 2)

It was a psychological drama set during the Wars. They had a zombie in the cast, which means he’s got experience dealing with Z’s, something that we’re definitely not gonna get with any other potential coach out there.

Panel 5: A two-part set of panels that consist of two halves of the same general scene taking place. In this first half, we see Zoe reacting with an unease to the explanation Obie gave in the previous panel.

ZOE Good points. Still, not exactly sold on it. Unless you’re holding back some deep well of political strategy this Nathan dude has--

Panel 6: In the second half, we see Madison looking over her shoulder at the two of them from the table in the background. Her interest piqued somewhat after listening in on the chat from the kitchen table the whole time.

MADISON

(interjecting, to Zoe)

He might be onto something, Zoe. Debates are basically live plays. And there has been precedent for the idea working before in other races.

Page 181 (Chapter 8, Page 4)

Panel 1: Cut to a shot of a short red haired woman in a debate setting against a similarly tall pudgy man that is visible to the left of the panel view.

(Cont., Madison)

“There was the Ohio Gubernatorial Debate 3-4 years ago where the Dem Socialist challenger used a former body language coach to help her out.”

Panel 2: We move to another freeze-frame type shot of a debate setting with a 25 year old candidate squaring up against someone nearly 3 times their elder. This time, it’s a little less put together and formal than it was in Panel 1, as if the background behind it was made with a considerably smaller budget in mind.

(Cont., Madison)

“There’s also that city council race in Tennessee...Knoxville, I wanna say? The incumbent in the race brought in a former Commercial director for the debates they were in.”

Caption

(Zoe)

“And how did either of them do in their races?”

Panel 3: Cut to a shot of Madison at the table, slowly standing up from her chair; the tablet placed to her side as she speaks. You can see some section of walls and part of a whiteboard behind her in the background.

MADISON

…Not that well, admittedly. But that had nothing to do with the coaches in question. It was because they were unlucky...and kinda crappy candidates.

MADISON

(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 4, Bubble 1)

Haha...true, true.

Panel 4: Back to a shot of Zoe’s face holding back a partial chuckle as she speaks, still somewhat skeptical to the idea.

ZOE

Both things that describe us to a T.

OBADIAH

(Off-Panel)

Umm….

Panel 5: Cut to a shot of the staffer Obadiah, standing in the room and listening to his bosses all this time. He’s been unsure up until this moment what exactly he should say, if anything; the nerves settling into a steady baseline in his stomach.

OBADIAH

(Cont., to Zoe and Madison)

Should I go now? Or do you need my help?

(Director) “That’s a wrap on Charles…”
