Rock The Vouhhhnn!, Chapter 8: Part 1.3
Page 182 (Chapter 8, Page 5)
Panel 1: We cut to a shot of the “Peace Time” set right around the same time we’ve been with our respective heroines. You can see the back of the director’s head near the bottom of the panel’s view, surrounded by crew who are applauding Nate who is visible in the center of the shot along with the actor playing Ron.
DIRECTOR
(Cont.)
Let’s give him a hand for the really great work he’s done.
Panel 2: Action shot of Nate getting out of costume in a separate multi-purpose room near the set. You can see his regular clothes splayed out on a chair next to him, along with his bag. As he’s changing, his phone starts to ring from inside the bag.
Panel 3: A few moments later, he answers the phone. The layout of the scene has shifted slightly compared to the previous panel, showing a different view of the multi-purpose room that has acted as his dressing room through this part of the shoot.
NATE
Hello?
ZOE
(through the receiver) Is this Nathan Kelly?
NATE
(Bubble 2) Speaking. This isn’t some type of political campaign call, is it?
ZOE
(Bubble 2, through the receiver)
Yes and no.
Panel 4: Cut to a shot of Zoe back in HQ on her phone, seated on the couch. You can see an opened program from the theatre festival laid out on the table in the bottom of the panel view.
ZOE
(Cont.)
I’m with the Henry Skelton campaign. I want to offer you a job, if you’re interested.
Panel 5: A two-part set of panels that moves back to Mr. Kelly in the same setting/layout as Panel 3. He has an intrigued look on his face connected to Ms. Olson’s statement. You can see his free hand leaning against the edge of the table, albeit not tightly.
NATE
What’s the job?
ZOE
(through the receiver)
Debate Coach.
Panel 6: In the second part, we see him lose his grip on the table, slip and fall down onto the ground; a “WHOMP!” sound effect popping up from the bottom of the panel view upward.
Page 183 (Chapter 8, Page 6)
Panel 1: We move to a slight close-up on the young man pulling himself back up to his feet moments later; the phone still in hand as before. You can see a pained look on Nate’s face as he speaks, though he doesn’t have any noticeable scars or welts on his face.
ZOE
(through the receiver) You okay?
NATE
(nods)
Might have been my brain blanking out for a minute in surprise. I mean, giving a guy like me with no political experience such an important job--
ZOE
(interjecting, through the receiver; Bubble 2)
It’s quite real, Mr. Kelly.
Panel 2: We move back to Zoe in the same place that we left her back in the previous page. She chuckles and grins widely, connected to the bit of witticism that typifies the end of her statement.
ZOE
(Cont.)
As you’ve probably noticed in the national press, we’re not a campaign that does things...normally.
NATE
(through the receiver)
Haha...no shite!
Panel 3: Action shot back in the room, showing Nate pacing a few steps away from the table which can be seen partially over his right shoulder. He grins a bit, connected to the previous panel’s chuckle.
NATE
(Cont.)
I don’t really know what a debate coach is though. Could you explain what you guys are looking for?
Panel 4: Back to Zoe in the same setting/layout as Panel 2. The smile has faded slightly from her face compared to that time, though the calm and casual demeanor she displayed is still visible here.
ZOE
Nothing overly complex, if that’s what you’re worried about. All we need is someone who will make sure we look good in our debate, keep us on message.
NATE
(through the receiver)
Hmmm...sounds like you’re looking for a director.
ZOE (Bubble 2) That’s how your name came up- your work at the Indianapolis Theatre Festival.
Panel 5: Back to Mr. Kelly in the same setting/layout as Panel 3. He stops for a brief moment; his face flashing a look of unease in terms of the last thing Zoe tells him.
NATE
Ohh I get it now. But I just wrote the script. I’m--I’m not really a director by trade.
ZOE
(through the receiver) I know. But, as an actor, I imagine you’ve worked with a great deal of directors in your career. You couldn’t use some of that experience here?
Panel 6: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. The unease from before has changed towards more of an intrigued look on his face, pondering Zoe’s question from the end of Panel 5.
NATE
(thought bubble)
...She makes a good point.
(Bubble 2)
Do I have to be there in Indiana for this job?
ZOE
(through the receiver)
Not in the slightest. Remote would be optimal, given the latent risk of mutilation.
