Rock The Vouhhhnn!, Chapter 8: Part 2.2

Page 186 (Chapter 8, Page 9)

Panel 1: On a plain brown wooden desk background, we see the panels divvied up as cards representing past directors Nate has had; The left side is good, and the right side of the panel is bad. In Panel 1, we see a loudmouth director DAVY KREUTZ drifting toward the negative side of the area.

(top half area, Nate)

“There’s Davy Kreutz from my high school drama class. Lazy, bit of a prick...definitely steer away from that.”

Panel 2: In Panel 2, we see PAULINA BAILEY drifting toward the left of the page; the caption appearing in the same place as it was in the previous panel.

Caption (Cont., Nate)

“Paulina Bailey, when I did ‘Miss Saigon’ a little after college...she was great. Smart, steady, open to criticism. I don’t know much about Zoe or this Madison lady. But she’s a pretty good role model for something like this.”

Panel 3: The next card highlights HUGH ARMSTEAD, drifting somewhere close to the middle of the divide.

Caption (Cont., Nate)

“Hugh Armstead was...a big ball of nothing. Not great, not horrible- not really useful here.”

Panel 4: The final card highlights ROWENA as she moves firmly toward the good side of the measure.

Caption (Cont., Nate) “Then there’s Rowena. I’ve only known her a little while, with the one show. But the way she lit into people who didn’t care to learn their lines properly.”

Panel 5: We move to a shot in the present of Mr. Kelly sitting up against the couch cushion in his apartment; his gaze up toward some point off-panel in front of him. You can see the glow of the laptop screen hit his chin and the top of his chest.

NATE

(thought bubble)

Pretty sure that’s gonna be useful with what’s coming up, one way or another.

Panel 1: Same setting/layout as the last panel of the previous page. His head tilts back down to screen level a few moments later at the sound of a gentle ringtone coming from the laptop.

Panel 2: Cut to a screenshot of the laptop, split on two sides befitting a teleconferencing app. On the left side of the screen is Zoe, and on the right side is Madison who’s wearing her headphones at this moment.

ZOE

Hey Nate. How’s your week been?

NATE

(Off-Panel, to Zoe)

Not bad. Just, uh, been trying to wrap my head around the job since we talked last.

ZOE

(Bubble 2)

We’ve still got months till the debate. It’s okay if you’re still learning things on the fly.

Panel 3: We move back to Nate in a two-part set of panels; the setting and layout similar to what we saw in Panel 1. In the first part, the young man grins slightly at Ms. Olson’s last statement from the previous panel.

NATE

Great. I’m gonna need all the time I can muster to really get a handle on things...

Panel 4: In the second part, a beat later, his focus shifts over to the right side of the screen upon noticing the headphones on Ms. Mitchell’s neck; a look of sudden curiosity coming over his face.

NATE

(to Madison) Why do you wear headphones? Can’t you hear me over there?

Panel 5: Cut to Madison’s side of the screen, glancing over at Nate’s direction with a degree of earnestness in her response.

MADISON

I’m autistic. The headphones keep things balanced in my head. Don’t worry, I can still hear you perfectly.

Panel 6: We move to a shot of Zoe a beat later, flashing a slightly disconcerting look connected to Nate’s question from Panel 4.

ZOE

Unless you’re worried for...other reasons.
