The Community, Issue 2: Part 1.1
Page 26
Panel 1: We open on the shot of a bathroom door. The only action in the scene is the sound of music bumping from inside. There's a little section of a rainbow colored wall to the left of the panel view.
Panel 2: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. The door swings open, and we see Celia step out lip-synching to "100% Feminista" by MC Carol. She's wrapped in a towel over her body as well as a hair net over her dark locks; she's shorter than we saw at the end of Issue 1.
CELIA
(rapping)
Eu cresci, prazer Carol bandida
Represento as mulheres, 100% feminista
Eu cresci, prazer Carol bandida
Represento as mulheres, 100% feminista...
Panel 3: Action shot of her dancing around the hallway to her bedroom. You can see a little bit of the layout of her apartment in the background, including her living room.
CELIA
(Cont., rapping)
Represento Aqualtune, represento Carolina
Represento Dandara e Xica da Silva
Sou mulher, sou negra, meu cabelo é duro...
Panel 4: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. The song is interrupted by a ringing phone, which also stops the young woman in her tracks.
CELIA
(sighs, looking to the ceiling; translated from Portuguese)
Couldn't have waited till I got some coffee in me...
Panel 5: Cut to a shot a short time later of her friend MARTA via Facetime from Celia's phone. She's dressed in a comfortable shirt with her hair messy, seated on the couch in her living room and glancing at her best friend's look.
MARTA
(to Celia, sly grin; translated from Portuguese)
Hey Cee- didn't mean to poke in on Nude Boogie Friday.
MARTA
(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 6, Bubble 1)
Bosousa's goons are trying to kneecap the states lockdowns again.
Panel 6: Back to Celia nodding and chuckling as she heads back out of the bathroom with phone in hand in the direction of her room; her left hand holding the towel in place.
CELIA
(slightly correcting, to Marta)
No worries. Just hopped out of the shower. What's up?
Page 27
Panel 1: Celia furrows her brow at the statement as she starts to turn toward her closed bedroom door.
CELIA
(to Marta, translated from Portuguese)
I thought they ruled against him on "balance of power" issues.
Panel 2: Back to Marta on the phone screen chuckling lightly; her face showing a bit of unease connected to her response.
MARTA
(to Celia, translated from Portuguese)
They appealed late last night- fake economic liberty BS, if I had to guess. They just agreed to hear it a few hours ago.
Panel 3: A two-part set of panels that moves back to Celia as she's about to step inside her bedroom. In the first part, she scoffs at the worry from her friend.
CELIA
Definitely annoying. But no way they'd side with the administration against trying to keep people safe...
Panel 4: In the second part, mid-stride through the partially opened doorway, she stops her train of thought. A look of sudden dread pops across her face, picturing the antithesis of what she just said.
CELIA
(Cont., with dread)
Oh. Crap.
MARTA
(from the phone's speaker)
I know...
Panel 5: Back to Marta from the phone screen a beat later, tilting her head to the left in an offering stance.
MARTA
(Cont.)
I sent the word on WhatsApp to the rank and file to protest this afternoon outside the courthouse. Already got a Lyft to pick me up in a few hours.
MARTA
(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 6, Bubble 1)
Alright. Don't forget our Doras.
Panel 6: We move back to Celia in a shot framed squarely on her face as she moves into the bedroom; a look of strength and sheer determination on her face.
CELIA
I'll do the same here. Text me where the protest's starting.
CELIA
(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 5, Bubble 2)
Of course...
