Daylight Saving, Issue 4: Part 2.3

Page 86

Panel 1: Action shot of the friends heading up the tunnel toward the theater where their showing of "X-Men" is playing. You can see a medium sized bag of popcorn in Rachelle's hands as she speaks.

FALIS

(explanatory)

Fadumo iyo Farax. It's a story from Somali mythology. It's about a group of children who go through seven trials while trying to avoid being eaten by their cannibal mother.

JAZ

Hardcore! Not sure if these white people will really go for it.

FALIS

(Bubble 2)

Obviously, I wouldn’t focus on the death part of the story. But the seven trials...I think there’s a lot of similarities there to what our generation and the generations before us will face due to global warming.

Panel 2: With some apprehension mixed with agreement, Jaz gives a slight nod to the idea.

JAZ

Not a bad idea, on paper. You’d need at least a passing assist from an adult to make it a reality though...

Panel 3: Falis pipes in with a suggestion that comes to mind; her left hand reaching for one of the popcorn kernels.

FALIS

Good point…Isn't your brother studying Theatre up in London?

Panel 4: Cut to a shot of Jaz's brother LUKE in his dormitory the next day, mid-conversation with his younger sister with some interest at the idea through the confusion.

(Cont., Falis)

"Maybe he’d be willing to help..."

LUKE

I'd be happy to help, but I’d need a quick primer on what the story's about...

Panel 5: A quick rundown of the seven trials from the original story play out in the panel; the story coming together over the course of a few weeks. It ends right at a shot of the teenager performing in front of a gray background.

Panel 6: The image is blown up more, and displayed in what looks like a simple photograph; the background behind it a table in a newspaper editor's room.

EDITOR

(Off-Panel)

Not sure how newsworthy this is...

Panel 1: We move to a shot of the Editor examining the photo more carefully a beat later, with the photographer looking on nervously in the background.

EDITOR

(Cont.)

I could maybe squeeze it into the back of the Lifestyle section, just in front of the gossip bits. But that’s the best I can give this.

PHOTOGRAPHER

But the performance was about the environment, at least I think it was. That has to merit a crack with the Op-Ed people, maybe…

Panel 2: The Editor glances over his shoulder toward the young photographer with decades less experience than him, looking for more info.

EDITOR

Did this “performance” the girl made have any reference to Brie Benoit or A Better Normal?

Panel 3: The Photographer replies with a furious shaking of his head; the nerves hitting a sustained high level at this point.

EDITOR

(Cont., Off-Panel)

Then I doubt you’ll get anything better than what I got on offer.

Panel 4: Back to the Editor a beat later, placing the photo back down on the countertop again to finish his point up.

EDITOR

(Cont.)

Not unless you can find a connection with this girl and anything either Benoit or huh--their organization have mentioned the past five months...

Panel 5: Action shot of the Photographer walking in the middle of the Bullpen, pondering the rest of his boss' statement while nursing a disappointed look on their face.

Panel 6: Passing one of the TVs hanging on the wall, you can see file footage of Mx. Benoit above a chyron that reads "HOAX BENOIT SIGHTING IN ITALIAN VILLAGE, 5TH SINCE MARCH.”

(State Sen. de Lancie)

"Thank you for finally taking this meeting, Mx. Benoit."
