Daylight Saving, Issue 4: Part 3.1

Page 88

Panel 1: We move to a shot of Brie and Kym gliding along on a booth a split second before taking their respective seats.

BRIE

(grateful nod, to State Sen. de Lancie)

Of course. My apologies for delaying it right up to the DNC- just wanted to do our due diligence.

KYM

(chiming in on the thought, to State Sen. de Lancie)

Not to mention the paparazzi trying to snag a quick buck. Speaking of which: your people got the NDA we E-Mailed a few days ago?

Panel 2: The Senator is seated at the other side of the booth in an immaculate dark blue suit, grabbing hold of one of the menus lying on the table top as he speaks.

STATE SEN. DE LANCIE

I did, yea- faxed it to your office just before I got here. And don’t worry about the time scenario. Political conventions are mostly gaudy coronations, especially this year. Not really missing much…

(Bubble 2)

Thank you for letting me choose the venue for it.

Panel 3: Wide shot of the dining area of the restaurant they're in: El Compadre. It's right in the beginning of its lunch service.

Caption

(Cont., State Sen. de Lancie)

"I always try to drop by El Compadre any time I'm in L.A."

Panel 4: The waiter pops by a short time later, drawing the politician's attention with the familiarity of many prior dining moments; the menu in hand and partly visible in the lower right corner.

STATE SEN. DE LANCIE

(Cont., to the Waiter)

I'll have my usual- the spiced cranberry margarita.

Panel 5: Back to Kym and Brie, splitting their attention between the menus and the waiter to give their drink orders.

KYM

Diet Coke for me.

BRIE

I'll take a Chocolate Milkshake.

Panel 6: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. Ms. Clarkson shoots her friend a surprised and confused look regarding their drink order.

BRIE

(Cont. to Kym, defensive)

Too early?

STATE SEN. DE LANCIE

(chuckles, Off-Panel)

Not at all. It’s just…nice to know the "quirkiness" isn't an act.

Panel 1: The Senator shifts his focus a moment later toward the business at hand, straightening himself slightly in his seat as he speaks.

STATE SEN. DE LANCIE

(Cont.)

Now tell me a bit about this Engineering-only school you mentioned that actually sparked the most interest for me: the Gerwig.

Panel 2: As Kym explains as best as she could, Brie reaches into their purse in search of a visual reminder for it.

KYM

Well, Senator, calling it strictly an "engineering-only" school is a slight understatement. It would, in my vision, encompass multiple disciplines from the engineering to the chemical focuses to physics and to even a PR component.

Panel 3: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. The young person joins in a beat later, holding a rolled up initial map of the school they'll set out in the center of the table.

BRIE

Initially, there won't be a corporate component in terms of funding. But in a year or two (hopefully) we’ll put on different showcases where soon-to-be graduates can debut their--

Panel 4: Andrew's respective calm was disrupted by the first sentence in Mx. Benoit's explanation; his face turning more serious and concerned as he speaks.

STATE SEN. DE LANCIE

No corporate money? How exactly are you going to pay for this school then?

Panel 5: Back to Brie a few moments later, just as the map is unfurled on the table for the most part in front of them.

BRIE

(nervous)

Well...I--we were thinking a rise in the tax rate for the top 1% statewide would fund its construction. And as the different tech would come through, like I said, you'll see more corporate partners naturally want to come into play and--

Panel 6: The Senator chuckles once again, interjecting with a sense here of skepticism to the idea as a whole.

STATE SEN. DE LANCIE

I’m right with you, on a spiritual level. But politically, given what November’s gonna look..it's hard for me and my colleagues bring in Republicans in Sacramento without some solid private foundation at the outset.

Panel 7: Quick shot of Kym and Brie glancing at one another a beat after the end of the previous panel, thinking on the fly what to do next.

STATE SEN. DE LANCIE

(Cont., Off-Panel)

So, what else do you guys got?
