Daylight Saving, Issue 4: Part 3.3

Page 92

Panel 1: A three-part set of panels composing of a montage of the two of them on the phone, going through a set of names on a piece of notebook paper. First, it's Brie in their bedroom.

Caption

(Cont., Brie)

"Part of me’s held out hope that I could get through this without revealing my actual face to the world. But with this situation in Reno, that hope has been chucked into the proverbial waste bin."

Panel 2: In the second one, it jumps to Kym on her cell phone walking down the hallway at A Better Normal; a piece of paper of her own with different names.

Caption

(Cont., Brie)

"It'd be ideal if the reporter I talk to has covered World News or the Sciences. But I’ll take any one with a scrap of sympathy to the cause.”

Caption

(Kym)

“What about the Reno thing? Maybe some journo there knows this dude personally, can shine a light on that.”

Caption

(Brie)

“Excellent idea, Kayla…”

Panel 3: In the final one, we go back to Mx. Benoit in their office at a different time. As they've finished crossing one of the names off in frustration, another call pops in from off-panel right.

Caption

(Cont., Brie)

"In the meantime, we continue the work. Let’s get some people up to Sacramento, and see if we can't get another big fish for the Gerwig bill before the Summer Break ends."

KYM

(Off-Panel)

Hey Brie, I've got good news and bad news.

Panel 4: Standing in the doorway of their office, Ms. Clarkson has a look on her face balancing precariously between worried and encouraged as she speaks; the closed phone and the piece of paper both gripped in her right hand.

KYM

(Cont.)

Good news: I found a reporter with knowledge about the photos. Bad news: what that knowledge was…kinda terrified the **** outta me.

KYM

(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 5, Bubble 1)

Read my mind, buddy...!

Panel 5: Brie lets out a brief sigh through their nose, baring for whatever their friend might be talking about.

BRIE

Jack-in-the Box to lay it all out?

Panel 6: A short time later, seated at an outdoor table in the respective restaurant, we see the young person glancing at the notes Kym had written.

BRIE

(mouth agape)

That...I understand how it freaked you out. You sure you heard this reporter correctly though?

Panel 1: Kym nods at the other end of the table, taking a swig of a milkshake; the piece of paper pressed to the metal table with her left hand. You can see a glint of Southern California sunshine popping in from the top right corner of the panel.

KYM

Kinda hard to mishear "Mega Tidal Wave Crushing Times Square." Sounded like it was ripped off from a Roland Emmerich movie.

Panel 2: Brie chuckles knowingly for a brief moment at the reference, glancing somewhere at the street as they speak. You can partly see Ms. Clarkson reacting with some confusion at the remark.

BRIE

(to themself)

An understandable notion…!

KYM

You have future knowledge about that, don’t you?

BRIE

(Bubble 2)

All I’m gonna say is- Summer 2004 is gonna be pretty fun one (albeit a painfully white one). Anyway...I wonder how the hells this person isn’t already the biggest story in the world, with a photo like that.

Panel 3: The young woman shrugs a beat later, placing the cup back on the table top as she speaks.

KYM

(snarks)

Probably the same reason why some people think you're still a fake.

Panel 4: Mx. Benoit shrugs and lets out a slight chuckle, silently agreeing on the gist of the overall point; their hand reaching out for a sip of their milkshake as they speak.

BRIE

Touche. I'd love to talk to this reporter, maybe see if they can get me in touch with this person and the photos one-on-one.

KYM

(Off-Panel)

A nice idea, my friend. Unfortunately though, they don't share the sentiment.

Panel 5: Kym fires back a few moments later with a note of a bright spot amidst the apologetic tone; the straw a few inches from her lip after taking a swig.

KYM

Not out of personal spite. Their editor's not the biggest fan of you, and would rather keep their job than be seen helping you.

BRIE

(Off-Panel)

Hurts, but won't fault their logic.

KYM

(Bubble 2)

They did give the name of the "nutjob" though: Kayvan Marshall

Panel 6: At that point, a bright idea pops into the young person's head; a slight smirk coming on the left side of their face.

KYM

(Cont., Off-Panel)

Not sure what good a big black Lesbian and her non-binary buddy from L.A. can do with it.

BRIE

I might have a way...
