Daylight Saving, Issue 4: Part 4.1

Page 94

Panel 1: A short time after going through their purse, Brie places at the center of the table the same bulky circular USB drive they used back in Issue 2.

BRIE

(Cont.)

A digital Skeleton Key. I used this to help me infiltrate the TV studio during the Super Bowl--

Panel 2: Driven partly by instinct and partly by fear of someone catching wind, Kym interjects right on top of Mx. Benoit's explanation.

KYM

(interjecting)

You mean the crime you've somehow gotten away with? The one that, for all we know, the FBI have supposedly been looking into since it happened?!

Panel 3: Brie keeps a relatively even-keel through the emotional jolt, shifting to a reassuring tone as they speak.

BRIE

We’re perfectly fine, Kym. The type of technology would need to connect me to that incident won't be invented for 35 more years. I'll be long gone by then, with- hopefully- a better world left as a legacy.

Panel 4: The young person shifts back to the proverbial task at hand, lifting the USB device up with their right hand as they return to the initial explanation from the top of the page.

BRIE

(Cont.)

Anyhow, with this and an assist from your…quaint search engines, I should be able to access to phone records and security camera footage throughout the city to see who this Kayvan Marshall is and where they are.

Panel 5: Ms. Clarkson ponders the idea in the moment; a bundle of worry and fascination mixed with one another.

KYM

Worth a shot, I guess...

Panel 1: Back at the office a short time later, Kym looks on as Brie works on the PC with admiration at the complexities going on and unease over the subtext underneath it.

KYM

(Cont.)

What about—?

BRIE

The software I put on this drive scrubs my presence from whatever computer terminal I plug in- you’ll be fine, along with the whole organization. I actually got the idea from an old Browser feature from the mid-2010s.

KYM

(Bubble 2)

Awesome…and so very, very wrong.

Panel 2: A random thought pops into Ms. Clarkson's head a beat later, showing a little more of the unease that we saw from the previous panel.

KYM

(Cont.)

I know, when you first told me you were from 2100, that I shouldn't ask too much about what my future is like. Or the future in general. But there's something about Silicon Valley I've been itching to ask--

BRIE

(Off-Panel)

You're wondering if Silicon Valley goes full utopia?

KYM

(Bubble 2)

...Kinda, yeah.

Panel 3: Mx. Benoit glances at their friend in response as they near the end of the search; the screen visible to the left of the panel.

BRIE

Not really, no. Most of them are completely lost up their own proverbial butts in ego and rich person sci-fi. There were some who...eh, i don’t think this qualifies as a "Spoiler,” given what I’ve read about in the news. In time, they’ll--

Panel 4: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. The computer lets out a brief beep just as the finished results pop up on the screen.

BRIE

(Cont.)

Okay, we've got a match. 2215 Grand Canyon Blvd. I'll take a plane up to Reno tomorrow, and--

BRIE

(Bubble 2; reacting to Panel 5, Bubble 1)

Not if I don't pop in and out quick. This is the perfect time to finally debut my--

Panel 5: Kym flashes a cautious half-smile at the development; her mind shifting to the next step as she speaks.

KYM

(interjecting)

Whoa, umm- pretty sure you wouldn't get out of the airport without cameras peering into your earhole.

Panel 6: Breaking up the conversation a beat later is the Receptionist, cupping the phone receiver with her left hand.

RECEPTIONIST #2

Umm...someone from Rolling Stone, calling about a weird photograph in Reno?
