The Community, Issue 5: Part 1.1

Page 106

Panel 1: Action shot of Seanna half hour after we last left them at the end of Issue 4, jogging on a treadmill; a pair of sensors clipped on to his Sacramento Kings T-Shirt.

(Seanna, narration)

"It's been a couple of weeks since I woke up, and I'm still getting a handle on this new future I woke up to. Not to mention a weird pseudo fame on the morning show circuit, which has involved trying to keep my powers hidden from people."

(Cont. Seanna, narration)

"Fortunately, there aren't a lot of powers I've noticed I have; just the supercharged healing factor and a brain that feels like it's on fire 24/7."

Panel 2: At another part of the session, we see them slowly walking along a path with rails on either side. You can see the therapist in the background, watching carefully for any slipups.

(Cont. Seanna, narration)

"Anyway, there are some pretty awesome things I've seen about 2022. For example, we have a competent President again as well universal health care in this country. Not sure how we pulled off that miracle, but..."

Panel 3: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. Midway through their walk, Watkins drifts their head and the top half of their body toward one of the railings. You can see the therapist quickly move to the young person's position.

THERAPIST

(concerned, to Seanna) You okay...?

SEANNA

(nods, to the Therapist) Yeah.

(Seanna, narration)

"Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Remember the 'brain on fire' thing? I also get moments where it feels like."

Panel 4: Slight close-up on Seanna a few moments later, getting back and finishing the rest of their walk.

(Cont. Seanna, narration)

"I'm not sure if either one is a superpower, or something I should be notifying a doctor about. Whatever it is, I've gotten a decent handle on it."

Panel 5: We move to the end of the session as Seanna (carrying their SHIELD/Ace Pride bag) and Anna leave out the front door. You can see the glint of the afternoon sun on the slice of parking lot that we see in the scene.

"Besides, I've got other, slightly important matters to deal with."

ANNA

(curious, to Seanna) Have you heard anything from Sac State?

SEANNA

(explanatory, to Anna) The Admissions Rep I E-Mailed said the decision would be coming soon. Whatever 'soon' means.

ANNA

(Bubble 2) Your grades were good enough. I can't see why they wouldn't...

Panel 6: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. A split second later, there's a "DING!" coming from within Seanna's bag drawing their gaze downward.

ANNA

(Cont., Off-Panel) Speak of Diablo...!

Panel 1: They finish reading the message moments just as they're about to sit down on the passenger side seat; their left hand already laying the bag down on the floor.

SEANNA

(glances over at Anna) They're open to allowing me to enroll this coming Winter. But first, they want to meet with me for an interview before making a decision.

Panel 2: Back to Anna already seated, looking over in her son's direction; the key already in the ignition as she speaks.

ANNA

(pleased, to Seanna) Okay. When do they wanna meet?

Panel 3: We move to an action shot of Watkins moving to a seated position a moment later. You can see their left arm moving the locked phone down off-panel in the direction of the bag.

SEANNA

Tomorrow morning at 9. Normally, I'd take the bus. Which with the closest route would be cutting it close. I'd rather not be late.

Panel 4: Back to Anna in the same setting/layout as Panel 2. With her hand on the key, ready to turn it, she gives her child an apologetic look at their statement.

ANNA

Normally, I'd be happy to help, Thousand Watt. But I have a weekly staff meeting tomorrow that I can't push back 'cause of the holiday.

Panel 5: Same setting/layout as the previous panel. Seanna slips the phone into the opened bag, nodding in acquiescence at the response.

SEANNA

It's okay, mom.

Panel 6: Cut to early the next morning in Seanna's bedroom. They start to wake up, barely open their eyes as the alarm ring on their phone shines up on a little table next to the bed.

(Cont., Seanna)

"I'll find a way to get there."
